Plot synopsis[edit | edit source]
Edward Kenway fights Xiao Han aboard the Fenghuang, dodging all of his opponent's strikes, including a surprise rope dart attack. During the fight, Xiao Han declares that, fellow Assassin or not, Edward needs to die for standing in the path of the Chinese Brotherhood's "grand cause". To this, Edward remarks that he suffers no fools, especially an Assassin who turned his back on the Creed, and calls out Xiao Han's mistake of boarding his ship. Just then, several crew members appear behind Edward and aim their guns at Xiao Han, forcing him to stand down.
Meanwhile, Shimazu Saito duels Xue Yan until the Assassin, realizing she is outmatched, escapes via parachute. Seeing that Xue Yan has been defeated and that a storm is rapidly approaching, Xiao Han declares that there is no point in continuing the battle and warns Edward that he will not interfere with the Chinese Brotherhood's cause a second time. He then calls out to Liu Qing, who is being held at gunpoint by John Young, and both Assassins jump off the Fenghuang and deploy their parachutes, heading back to Zheng's ship.
With Zheng's fleet approaching, Edward orders Rupiya to sail into the storm to lose their pursuers. Xiao Han asks Zheng to do the same, but the admiral does not want to risk losing her fleet and calls off the pursuit. However, she assures the Assassin that no one betrays Madam Lee and lives to tell the tale. Liu Qing and Xue Yan then apologize to Xiao Han for their defeat, but the Mentor tells them that it was not their fault, as Edward's crew is stronger than they anticipated, and that, given their pursuit of the same prize, their paths are bound to cross again.
As the Fenghuang sails through the storm, Xialun Qing tends to the injured crew members while Edward reprimands himself for not taking their opponents more seriously. Eventually, the ship makes it out of the storm, but a lookout informs Edward that they have been followed by one of Zheng's ships. The Assassin orders the crew to prepare for battle, but before they have a chance to open fire, a Dutch East India Company vessel sinks the enemy ship. At the helm is Jan van Aert, who has decided to accompany Edward on his "adventure".
