Plot synopsis[edit | edit source]
At the Dutch East India Company's headquarters in Macau, Jan van Aert thanks Edward Kenway for protecting one of his company's ships and suggests that they could reach an amicable business partnership. However, Edward remains suspicious of Jan and, despite not seeing anything to indicate his affiliation with the Templars, decides to keep an eye on the man for now. Jan then makes Edward an offer to rid the Paracel Islands of pirates who have overrun them and are targeting European ships, in exchange for keeping any valuables he can loot from the pirates. To sweeten the deal, Jan also promises to secure a five-year partnership between the Dutch East India Company and the Zhang Wei Union, much to Edward's excitement.
Meanwhile, at the Mandarin's House, Madam Lee discusses her decision to take in the ninja who came to seek her aid, explaining that she plans to set her enemies against each other to ensure their mutual destruction. She then orders one of her workers to retrieve a "boy with a talent for steering ships" that they found recently.
Meeting with John Young and Zhang to discuss Jan's proposal, Edward claims that it would be their best opportunity to grow their organization, and volunteers to complete the job alone due to his experiences in the Caribbean. However, despite disagreeing with Edward's decision to accept the job, John and Zhang refuse to let him endanger himself and wish to accompany him. Edward then goes to check on Yun Pyeong-Gyu at his workshop, finding that he has been working on hwachas and other weapons that could give them an edge over the pirates. After building and testing Yun's weapons, Edward and his crew equip them on their ship and set sail towards the Paracel Islands.
