Plot synopsis
Edward Kenway's standoff with Master Sun is broken up by the arrival of Madam Lee, who has allied herself with the Japanese ninja against the mixed-blood ninja in Sun's employ. Lee states that Sun's influence in Macau is at an end while threatening Edward to stay out of their business. As a showdown between Sun and Lee is about to commence, Jan van Aert comes with his men to break up the commotion. Siding with Jan, Edward showcases his alliance with the Dutch East India Company while thinking to himself that the Zhang Wei Union is now one of Macau's three major players.
After Lee's right-hand ninja states that a three-way confrontation will not work out and that he has a plan to deal with their rivals, Lee concedes and retreats alongside her men. Sun follows suit while vowing to drive both Lee and Edward out of Macau once he retrieves Angkor's treasure. Edward thanks Jan for the assistance and resumes his business with the Zhang Wei Union. However, he is soon approached by the Japanese ninja and their leader, Fuma Sukuna, who reveals that he is aware of Edward's Assassin affiliations and that he wishes to enlist his services.
Claiming that they share a common enemy in Shimazu Saito, who is leading the mixed-blood ninja and dishonoring the Shimazu clan's name, Sukuna asks Edward to assassinate her. Edward accepts and Sukuna reveals that Saito is likely located aboard Sun's floating gambling hall, where Sukuna and his ninja will also be waiting to help Edward accomplish his mission. Meanwhile, Sun talks with Saito about their alliance, claiming that the latter now owes him her loyalty after he protected her men. Though Saito is aware that this alliance is just another means of power for Sun, she decides to follow his lead until they decipher Hendrik's sea log, which will allow them to find Angkor.
At the Zhang Wei Union's headquarters, Edward informs Zhang and John Young about his new mission, which he claims will also be an opportunity to recover Hendrik's log from Sun. He then questions Zhang about one of the ships they have taken from the Paracel Islands pirates, to which the latter responds that Yun Pyeong-Gyu is currently overseeing repairs and that they have decided to name the ship the Fenghuang, the Chinese word for phoenix.
Deciding to check on Yun's progress, Edward is informed that all the repairs are done and that Yun has made several modifications to the ship's artillery, installing a number of new armaments. Yun is grateful to Edward for allowing him to express his creativity in such a way, and reveals that he has also modified the Assassin's right Hidden Blade, adding a crossbow element to allow him to eliminate targets from a distance. Edward thanks Yun for the gift before boarding a rowboat to infiltrate Sun's gambling hall and complete his mission.
