Assassin's Creed: Forgotten Temple Episode 48

Assassin's Creed: Forgotten Temple Episode 48 is the forty-eighth episode of Redice Studio's webtoon Assassin's Creed: Forgotten Temple, a sequel to Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. The webtoon, written by ARC and SHYATAN and with art by Tabii, was released on 19 March 2024.

Plot synopsis

Although Yun Pyeong-Gyu's weaponry has proven successful in wiping out most of Jeong's fleet, the admiral's ship remains operational and continues to pursue the Fenghuang. Edward Kenway remarks that Jeong must be a skilled navigator if she is able to keep up with them, to which Rupiya claims that he has heard stories about Jeong's infamy around the South China Sea.

Despite the setback, Jeong is able to sail her burning ship into the Fenghuang, ramming it. Rupiya performs evasive maneuvers to get the vessel to safety while Edward checks on his crew, who are unharmed. As they sail away from Jeong's ship, the Assassin finds it suspicious that the admiral has not yet opened fire on them despite being within range to do so. Meanwhile, Jeong addresses her passengers – Xiao Han, Liu Qing and Xue Yan – and tells them that she has brought them close to the Fenghuang like they wanted.

Together, the Chinese Assassins ready themselves with gliders and soar over Jeong's ship and towards the Fenghuang. As John Young celebrates their apparent escape from Jeong's ship, Shimazu Saito spots the incoming gliders and alerts the rest of the crew. After dropping grenades onto the deck, the Chinese Assassins begin killing the Fenghuang's crew while their movements are obscured by smoke.

Yun soon realizes that the fire from the explosion is Greek fire, which water is useless against, and orders the crew to gather sand to extinguish the flames. After the fire is successfully put out, Yun notices Xiao Han heading towards him and freezes in place, calling out for help. Immediately, Edward attacks Xiao Han and engages him in a sword fight. Liu Qing spots his Mentor in trouble and wishes to help, but is surrounded by John and several sailors, who hold him at gunpoint. Xue Yan attempts to provide cover fire with her crossbow, but is stopped by Saito, who prepares to exact revenge on the Assassin for the death of her friends.

Trivia

• Upon spotting the Chinese Assassins use gliders, John is surprised and asks "They fly now?!", to which Edward, similarly astonished, confirms "They fly now." This is a reference to a scene from the 2019 film Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, in which the characters Finn, C-3PO and Poe Dameron have a similar reaction upon seeing First Order jet troopers for the first time.
• John refers to the Chinese Assassins several times as Daedalus and Icarus due to their use of gliders. In Greek mythology, Daedalus was a famous inventor who created two sets of wings from feathers and beeswax for himself and his son Icarus to use to escape from Crete, only for Icarus to fall to his death after he flew too close to the Sun.
• The type of gliders used by the Chinese Assassins were historically not built until the 19th century, making their appearance here anachronistic.
