Plot synopsis
Shimazu Sei begins to experience the Bleeding Effect after Edward Kenway, in Noa Kim's body, addresses her as Shimazu Saito. Fortunately, she is able to prevent her ancestor's memories from taking over her body, before "Edward" informs her that the Piece of Eden they have come to retrieve is housed in the glowing compartment in front of them. "Edward" cautions that taking the artifact will be no easy feat, and soon both he and Sei fall under its influence, causing them to face their own personalized trials meant to test their wills.
Sei finds herself in a black void and begins looking around for Noa, only to come face-to-face with an apparition of Mitsuko Nakamura. The Inner Sanctum member reprimands Sei for betraying the Templars, claiming that the Order had given her everything: wealth, honor, and power. She then questions what could have possibly made Sei doubt the Templars' cause, and reminds the doctor of her work for Abstergo Industries, where she oversaw numerous test subjects, all of whom eventually succumbed to the Bleeding Effect while Sei did nothing to try and save them.
Continuing her taunting, Nakamura mockingly asks Sei if she hoped to achieve redemption by abandoning the Templars and claims that no one, not even the Assassins, will welcome her now, as she is no longer of use to anyone. Sei begins to cry and insists that she has her own purpose, only for Nakamura to point out that restoring the Shimazu clan's reputation used to be Sei's purpose. She then asks if Sei ever stopped to think about how her family will suffer because of her actions, before two more apparitions manifest themselves: one of a Shimazu clan elder, and another one of Yuki.
The Shimazu clan member angrily reprimands Sei for her betrayal, saying the clan has no room for traitors like her, while Yuki claims that Sei is no longer the same woman she swore to protect and that she will not be able to blindly follow her forever. After Nakamura tells Sei that she is nothing without the Templars, the doctor falls to her knees, utterly defeated and broken.
While Sei cries at the thought of having lost everyone and everything, she is suddenly approached by an apparition of Saito, who encourages her to face her fears and regrets. The samurai claims that every person must make a choice regarding their future, and just like how Saito learned to master her fate, it is now Sei's time to forge her own path. Encouraged by Saito to defeat all those who oppose her, Sei grabs her ancestor's katana and uses it to slice Nakamura while declaring that she will no longer doubt herself and allow others to push her around.
Having overcome the Piece of Eden's trial, the illusions begin to vanish as the glowing artifact reveals itself. Sei attempts to retrieve it, only to be grabbed by an apparition of one of her deceased test subjects. As more apparitions manifest themselves and blame Sei for their deaths, the doctor tries fighting them off, refusing to accept this as retribution for her mistakes. However, she is ultimately pinned down and begins to drown in a body of water. Out of options, Sei calls out Noa's name before losing consciousness.
