Plot summary
Madam Lee supervises the workers attempting to control the fire at her warehouse, inquiring if the arsonists have been discovered before being informed a group of Japanese pirates were responsible. She is also told that a single hooded man killed them all and orders her workers to find out everything they can about him. Meanwhile, Edward Kenway is chased through the streets of Macau by Dutch East India Company soldiers until he is once again rescued by John Young and his cannonfire. After boarding John's ship with his horse and the salt and sugar he acquired, the pair sail back to Zhang's village.
Thanks to Edward and John's remedy, many of the villagers are saved from cholera, although it is too late for Zhang's daughter, who ends up passing away. Edward expresses his remorse to John, revealing that he also has a daughter. John tries to comfort him, saying that what happened was fate, but Edward counters that people can change their fates, reminiscing of his days as a pirate and how joining the Assassins helped him find a nobler purpose to serve.
Edward and John's conversation is interrupted by Zhang and his wife who, alongside the rest of the villagers, express their gratitude for what the pair have done for them and offer to repay the favor. Edward tries to turn them down, but after being told by John that it would be considered an insult in Chinese culture, he decides to ask Zhang and his fellow laborers to become his informants in Macau, in the hopes of learning more about Madam Lee. After a week, they manage to confirm Edward's suspicions that Lee has acquired Hendrik's sea log and inform John, who in turn comes to tell Edward.
In the present, Shimazu Sei comments on Edward's—and by extension, the Assassins'—self-righteousness and stubborn belief that they can always help everyone, and is concerned that Noa Kim is exhibiting the same stubbornness.
