Plot summary
Edward Kenway eavesdrops on the conversation between Alan Jacob, Jan van Aert and Master Sun in the hopes of learning which of the three men is a Templar. Alan proposes a plan to root out Madam Lee by combining their respective companies' resources. With Sun continuing to pay the Shimazu clan to attack Lee's company and Jan having the Dutch East India Company detain Lee's ships in the harbor, Alan is sure that Lee's business will plummet, benefiting all of them. To further entice Sun and Jan's cooperation, Alan shows them a "treasure" he has acquired, which he claims will bring them unprecedented wealth.
Concerned about what he learned, Edward goes to Madam Lee to warn her. While Lee is worried that her company will not be able to defend itself if all of her enemies work together, Edward assures her that the Assassins have always managed to keep the Templars at bay in spite of their vast resources and connections. However, Lee still expects her network to suffer some casualties, as her rivals will likely target the Macau market and her fleet simultaneously, making it impossible to defend both. As such, she instructs Edward to focus on the market, where her most important workers are located, believing that her company will be able to handle the loss of several ships and sailors.
Angry, Edward states that he does not condone how Lee treats her workers as cargo and expendable, much to her surprise. He then prepares to leave, but is interrupted by the arrival of one of Lee's workers, who reveals that the market is under attack by ninja, while Lee's fleet is being raided by pirates, with the Dutch East India Company refusing to send any ships to help them.
Faced with a dilemma, Edward is forced to choose between going to the market, where he has a chance of finding a lead as to the whereabouts of Hendrik's sea log, or trying to protect Lee's fleet. Although admitting that the former would be the wiser choice, he refuses to sacrifice innocent lives for his personal gain and thus informs Lee that she will have to defend the market alone. He then goes to meet with John Young and tells him to ready his ship as they'll be sailing into the sea to deal with the pirates attacking Lee's fleet.
