Plot synopsis[edit | edit source]
After knocking out Jan van Aert, Rupiya leaves to rescue his fellow Zhang Wei Union members who have been imprisoned. At the same time, Edward Kenway sets out to free John Young, Yun Pyeong-Gyu, and Shimazu Saito, who are sharing a cell. He tells Xialun Qing to stay behind for her own safety, but Qing insists that she accompany him, arguing that she has proven herself more than capable of being helpful. Edward concedes and the two make their way to their companions' cell, which is heavily guarded.
Armed with only a dagger, Edward doubts that he will be able to take on all the guards by himself, so Qing offers to stage a distraction. Claiming she has been sent to check on the prisoners, Qing is allowed entry into the cell, where she informs John, Yun, and Saito of Edward's plan to rescue them. At that moment, Qing's pet monkey Wukong knocks down all the lamps in the corridor, blinding the guards and allowing Edward to pick them off individually.
However, one of the guards realizes something is amiss and tries to attack Qing for her deceit. John protects her, taking the sword strike instead, before Saito kills the guard. With John injured, the group decides to return to the Fenghuang so they can treat him. After retrieving their weapons, they make their way outside, where they run into Rupiya.
John immediately accuses the captain of betraying them, but Rupiya insists that he was coming to free them. He then points out that, if he was indeed betraying the crew, it would make no sense for him to come back for them. As John realizes his mistake, Edward praises Rupiya for his courage, to which the captain admits that the Zhang Wei Union has taught him that personal freedom is meaningless without a crew of trusted friends.
After Edward asks about the crescent amulet's whereabouts, Rupiya reveals that the artifact is stored in a nearby warehouse. At that moment, however, a volley of cannon fire from a ship strikes the beach in front of the warehouse. Aboard the vessel are Xiao Han, Liu Qing, and Xue Yan, which concerns Edward, who realizes that another confrontation with his fellow Assassins is inevitable.

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
After being struck by the guard, John tries to downplay his injury, insisting that "'Tis but a scratch [...] A mere flesh wound." This is a reference to two similar lines said by the Black Knight, a character in the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, after having both of his arms cut off.
