Plot synopsis[edit | edit source]
Edward Kenway uses his money to build up both Zhang's village and the Zhang Wei Union in order to draw up more business and thus more money. Dressing up Zhang as a businessman, Edward readies his newfound crew, which consists of John Young, Zhang, and the former pirate captain Rupiya and his crew. Sailing into the mainland, Edward and John watch as Zhang attempts to drum up business from the locals, to no avail.
As they contemplate why no one is willing to hire them, Edward, John and Zhang are suddenly approached by a merchant, who reveals that Madam Lee, Sun, and the Far East Company have blacklisted them, making it near impossible to find any clients. The merchant then reveals himself as the owner of the ship Edward defended from pirates a while back. Grateful for his assistance, he asks the Assassin if he would be willing to help him again, revealing that he needs someone to escort his ship to Manila and back for a business endeavor. Zhang enthusiastically accepts the job, and Edward readies his crew to sail to the Philippines.
During the voyage, Edward and John train their crew to be more effective with their weaponry and their duties aboard the ship. After arriving in Manila without incident, the merchant goes to conduct his business while Edward waits near the port. There, he catches up with a drunken John, who reveals that, while partying with the locals, he learned that the Far East Company and the East India Company are looking for people to partake in an expedition in Southeast Asia. Edward deduces the Templars to be behind this and is worried that they are already preparing to find Angkor.
Despite his concerns, Edward determines they are not yet ready to launch an expedition of their own, and decides to focus on building up the Zhang Wei Union's reputation first. As they prepare to sail back to Macau, the crew catches sight of a pirate ship attacking a Dutch East India Company vessel. Unwilling to let such an opportunity go, Edward orders his crew to attack the pirate ship, intending to take it as a prize.
