Plot synopsis[edit | edit source]
Jan van Aert orders his crew to open fire on Zheng's and the East India Company's fleets, much to the relief of Edward Kenway, who realizes that Jan is on the Zhang Wei Union's side, at least for now. As Zheng's fleet approaches his ship to retaliate with a full frontal assault, the rest of Jan's fleet—composed of both Dutch East India Company and privateer ships—emerges from the mist, catching Zheng by surprise. Surrounded by enemy vessels from all sides, the admiral realizes she is trapped and reluctantly orders her crew to retreat after some convincing from her lieutenant.
Meanwhile, Alan Jacob also concludes that his forces stand no chance of winning the battle against the Dutch East India Company's vastly superior armada. After one of his men confirms that they have secured the Piece of Eden in John Young's possession, Alan declares that there is no point in continuing a losing battle and orders his fleet to withdraw, having achieved their primary objective.
Watching the two enemy fleets retreat, Edward briefly reflects on John's betrayal before being approached by Jan and Zhang. Jan jokes about Edward and his crew "backstabbing" him back in the Sultanate of Sulu before inviting the group to accompany him on the voyage to Batavia, claiming they have much to discuss.
At Batavia's harbor, Edward formally greets Zhang, asking what the latter is doing so far from Macau. Zhang reveals that the Union's business in Macau is running smoothly and that he decided to seek out the Dutch East India Company for help, feeling that Edward and the others might have encountered difficulties during their search for the Pieces of Eden. Jan then arrives carrying drinks and praises Zhang's business skills, describing him as the best partner his company has ever had and revealing that it was Zhang's idea to recruit the privateers to their cause.
Changing the subject back to the Pieces of Eden, Jan tells Edward that the reason he decided to rescue him even after their previous falling out was because he needs the Assassin's help to restore the delicate balance of power in Southeast Asia. He goes on to explain that, with Madam Lee and Alan in possession of a Piece of Eden each, said balance is in danger and that the freedom of the entire human race may be at stake. Despite his misgivings, Edward agrees to resume his partnership with Jan, especially after the latter states that the Assassin could teach him the true meaning of freedom along the way.
The celebrations are cut short by Shimazu Saito, who claims that she does not care who joins Edward's "merry band" as long as they don't get in her way. Soon, Rupiya and Yun Pyeong-Gyu also arrive and announce their intentions to continue accompanying Edward on his adventure and protect humanity's freedom. With their objective set, Edward declares that, before they embark on their final voyage, they will need additional allies. Thus, he instructs the others to recruit any pirate and privateer willing to join their cause.
