Plot synopsis[edit | edit source]
After praising Fuma Sukuna for tracking down the Fenghuang, the Rattan Shield Company's captain orders his men to commence their attack on the ship. However, they fall into a trap set by the crew, as John Young, disguised as Edward Kenway, signals Yun Pyeong-Gyu and the other crew members hidden in the nearby forest to initiate their ambush. Immediately, the Company soldiers are felled by a volley of cannon fire from Yun's five-barreled cannons, though the captain and some of his men survive after arranging their impenetrable rattan shields in a turtle formation.
As the soldiers approach the Fenghuang, John narrowly avoids a sword swing from the captain and boards the ship, which sails away. The captain then turns his attention to Yun and the crew members still on the island, ordering his men to charge at them. However, they fall into another trap, as the crew releases several explosive barrels from the trees, which knock them down. Yun then ignites the barrels with a fire arrow, dealing further damage to the enemy troops.
Watching from afar, Sukuna orders Nagamasa and his mercenaries to lend their aid to the shieldmen. Nagamasa remarks that going against the Fenghuang crew's firearms with just their swords would be suicidal and pointless, as Shimazu Saito is not even present, but Sukuna tells the captain not to question his orders. Realizing Sukuna intends for them to be killed, Nagamasa tells his men that the time has come for them to switch allegiances.
In the village, Xialun Qing gives Edward the medicinal herbs she managed to gather, easing his pain and allowing him to fight again. Spotting smoke from the explosion in the distance, Saito realizes the battle on the beach was more intense than they had hoped and tells Edward and Qing that they need to go help Yun and the others. Just then, however, Nagamasa and his men arrive at the village, wishing to speak with Saito.
Nagamasa again asks the samurai how much she is willing to pay them for their services, to which Saito promises that, if they succeed in their goal of overthrowing the Shimazu clan, all of its resources would be put at their disposal. As two Shimazu ninja come to confront Nagamasa for disobeying Sukuna's orders, the captain kills them with his sword and decides to accept Saito's offer.
