Eivor searched for the missing five shards for the pedestal inside the Cave of Gold.
Dialogue
Eivor started her search for the missing five shards needed to open the door in the Cave of Gold.
She may have returned to inspect the door before finding them all.
Eivor:I need to find all of the shards and place them before I can open that door.
According to the map from the Fairy Glen, one of the shards was nearby in the settlement of Hungladder, according to the map Eivor deciphered. Investigating the settlement, Eivor soon found a letter within a burnt-down house.
Letter Found in Hungladder
Everyone is acting strange lately. Their patience ground down to nothing. Gudbrand was acting out of pure madness. He had to be killed.
There is something going on with the neighbors too. I heard screams coming from their home.
The other day I saw Ogmund get dragged inside. He never left.
My dread grows with each passing day.
From further investigation, Eivor uncovered a diary entry near supplies outside.
Crazed Diary Entry
So much smoke...
I would have thought burning a village would be easier than building one.
It had to be done. No one can find our discovery.
Must tie up all the loose ends.
Eivor recovering the first shard in the tunnel
Eivor soon found the shard underneath the settlement within the tunnel.
Eivor:This must be one of the shards I need to place on the pedestal.
Eivor left the hostile settlement and continued her search.
South along the road back to Tobhta, Eivor came across Kassandra on a small beach, who seemed to be talking to herself.
Kassandra:She's impossible, Aletheia. I know you want me to work with her but I know, I know. But what more can I do? She won't trust me...
Eivor:Is Kassandra... talking to herself? She is truly mad. Good riddance.
Eivor kept her distance and continued her quest.
Continuing on her journey, Eivor continued towards the Excavation Site. She found a damaged cart, a merchant burned to death, and a note beside the corpse.
Cart Driver's Letter
Of all the days for my cart to break, it had to happen when those relic hunters ordered their biggest shipment yet. I need to fix this damn wheel and get moving. Otherwise, who knows what they'll do? They've been getting more aggressive lately.
Just need to mount that wheel back. A couple of hammer blows should do it.
Eivor continued up the path and reached the site. Probing around, Eivor found a note on top of a stone tomb within a small cavern of the site.
Excavation Site Letter
We may have found something behind this damaged wall, but we are missing the explosives to bring it down.
A shipment of oil was due yesterday, but we have yet to see the merchant come from the southeast road in his run-down cart.
Eivor investigating the Fairy Pools
Eivor soon broke down the wall and recovered the second shard. Thus, Eivor left and headed to find the next shard.
Eivor travelled to Dun Ardtreck in the southwest. From her search, Eivor came across a note within a house of the area.
Diary Entry Found Near Dun Ardtreck
My back is sore from all the logs the chief has up pulling to build scaffolding for an excavation. He's convinced there's something shiny in those collapsed ruins. I'm not so sure. How rich could someone living in a shack on these cliffs really be? No way there's enough gold down there to drown for.
With these information, Eivor made her way down the cliff and scaffolding and dove into the waters. Searching underwater, Eivor found another shard and returned to the surface.
Eivor traveled to the next location and arrived at the Fairy Pools nestled in the southern part of the isle. Upon her search, Eivor found a sacrificed body and the shard pedestal behind the waterfall. However, the shard was missing. Once she left the pedestal, Eivor saw a woman near the sacrifice as she called Eivor out.
Old Woman:You there! Could you kindly step into this pool so I might complete my ritual for the fairies?
Eivor negotiating with the elderly woman for the shard
Eivor spoke to the woman, as wolves circled around them.
Old Woman:Oh, yes. Could you please be a dear and wade into the Fairy Pool so I can sacrifice you to the fairies?
Eivor:You're asking if you can kill me?
Old Woman:Since the nightmares started, the fairies have whispered in my ear, promising power if I find sacrifices for them. They've even led me to one of their treasures for my hard work. The prettiest shard. So please, into the pool now.
Eivor:What if I stay out of the pool and buy that pretty shard from you instead?
Old Woman:Oh... The fairies won't be pleased. But my daughter is getting married soon and I'd love to get her a wedding gift. All right. The shard is yours. Run along now.
Eivor:If you want me to go swimming, you're going to have to make me.
Old Woman:That's no trouble at all, dear. I'll help you right in.
Eivor and the woman, with the wolves, fought. Eivor proved victorious and killed the woman.
Eivor:Fairies are tricky creatures. Are you sure that shard isn't muddling your mind?
Old Woman:I haven't quite felt like myself lately... You could be on to something. Take this shard far away from me, please!
Eivor discovering the pedestal with the shard missing
Eivor recovered the shard from the woman and left the madness of the Fairy Pools behind her.
Eivor traveled to the Brother's Cave on a small islet across the water from the southeast of the main isle. Within the cavern, Eivor came across three snakes and an empty shard pedestal. Nearby, Eivor found a note by the pedestal.
Letter Found Near the Empty Pedestal
If you're reading this, you're too late! My brother and I have made off with the gold piece that so many are seeking.
Chances are, we've reached the village to sell it and rolling in newfound wealth! Better luck next time!
From this clue, Eivor headed to investigate the village of Inverarish, which appeared abandoned. Eivor noticed blood near a well and upon further look, a body was discovered at the bottom of it.
Eivor:One step closer.
Eivor visiting the house whose owners possessed the shard
Eivor saw a house barred up and found her way inside by pushing a movable structure from a window path. Inside, Eivor found another letter.
Letter Found in a House
The gold stone is what hurt you. It killed you. I didn't. I couldn't.
I must hide the shame. And your body. Deep into the ground. As for my soul, that will vanish deep into the woods.
Eivor left the house and followed footprints from outside the door.
Eivor:Footprints. Walking at a hastening pace.
Eivor followed the trail as it led her into an abandoned lookout in the woods, which was stalked about by bears. Eivor noticed scaffolding and climbed up, only to see another dead body with a letter near it.
Letter Found Near a Dead Man
Remember when we were young? You were strong like a bear. I was weak like a deer.
I wish we could be young again. If only because you were still alive. Maybe your next path won't be cut short by me.
Eivor recovering the body from the body on the scaffolding
After seeing how one brother killed the other, Eivor recovered the shard from the body.
With all five shards obtained, Eivor remarked on the completion of her quest.
Eivor:That's all the shards. Time to unlock the temple and end the nightmares. And Kassandra thought I needed her help.
Outcome
Eivor collected all five triangle shards for the Cave of Gold's pedestal.
Behind the scenes
Each section of the memory is self-contained in terms of dialogue and has no dependencies on the order in which the player retrieves the shards. For the purposes of this page, they have been arranged in the order of starting with the shard nearest to the Cave of Gold and traveling counterclockwise around the map to collect them.
If players use the male avatar for Eivor, Kassandra's ambient conversation with Aletheia will refer to her with male pronouns. This marks one of the few times in the game that Eivor's male presentation will be acknowledged, instead of a good majority of the game which will use the more neutral "they" or "them" or where she'll be referred to with female pronouns regardless of the player's chosen avatar.
