Stray Naps was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.
Eivor came across a snoring man.
While in Grimsby, Eivor heard a woman shouting for her husband.
- Norse Woman: Bjarte! Bjarte! Come home!
Follow my voice, Bjarte!
Bjarte? Can you hear me?
Eivor spoke to her.
- Eivor: Looking for someone?
- Norse Woman: My husband... he was not supposed to leave home on his own. I fear he has fallen asleep somewhere.
- Eivor: Fallen asleep?
- Norse Woman: Yes. A curse he has carried his whole life. At any moment, his eyes roll back and his body simply collapses.
- Eivor: Dangerous to be out there on his own. You think he would have gotten far?
- Norse Woman: His bag is gone. I fear he may have taken it to go fruit picking down south near the old ruins. Bjarte, where are you?
- Eivor: I will keep an eye out for him.
- Norse Woman: Thank you. He snores, if that helps.
Eivor took her leave and made for the ruins, where she found Bjarte.
While traveling in the wilderness of northeastern Lincolnscire, Eivor happened across a sleeping man near some Roman ruins.
Eivor read a note near him.
Folded Note
- Stranger,
If you are reading this, you have either found me asleep or killed me and stole from my corpse.
If it be the first, I regret this annoyance and ask that you return me to my wife in Grimsby, a village to the north by the shoreline of Lincolnscire.
If it be the second, I hope you slip and fall down the sheerest of cliffs.
Eivor elected to bring the man home, summoning her horse and loading him onto its rear. He talked through his sleep, snoring and mumbling while Eivor navigated through the forest to the north to reach Grimsby.
- Norse Man: Of course not. No, no, no, I-I'm just resting my eyes, I swear it. (snoring)
Enough! You know not to touch me there. (snoring)
No, you are the one with the big nose, not me. (snoring)
While he rambled through his sleep, Eivor made no secret of her annoyance.
- Eivor: A man who falls asleep at any moment. How did you last this long?
It's not enough that you're deadweight, I have to listen to your babbling as well.
As she entered Grimsby with Bjarte, she heard his wife's voice.
- Norse Woman: Bjarte! Bjarte! Come home!
Follow my voice, Bjarte!
Bjarte? Can you hear me?
Eivor brought Bjarte to her.
- Norse Woman: O gods, Bjarte! Bring him inside!
Eivor unloaded him from the horse.
- Eivor: Lucky it was me that found you. Me on a good day, I might add.
Outside the house, Eivor found Bjarte's journal on sacks of grain.
Bjarte's Journal
- In three days' time, the fruit in the ruins south of Grimsby should be ready to pick. Brima will try to stop me, or worse, she will insist on being in my company! I thank Odin she is a heavy sleeper. I will go before the sun rises and return before she wakes.
Eivor brought him inside and set him down on the floor.
- Eivor: I found him asleep beneath a tree. He's unharmed.
- Norse Woman: My poor Bjarte. I am so glad he's all right. You saved his life.
- Eivor: Luck was with him. No hungry wolves or roaming bandits. The note he carries is helpful, but he must have more caution. He may not be so lucky the next time.
- Norse Woman: You are right. I will wait until he wakes, and when he does, I will belt him.
- Eivor: That is a start. Farewell.
- Norse Woman: I can breathe again. You're all right!
I was filled with worry.
Eivor brought the man home to his wife.
