The Giants of Fimbulwinter was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.
Description[edit | edit source]
Havi encountered two Jötnar who were the source of the blizzard in Jötunheimr.
Dialogue[edit | edit source]
Having met with Gunlodr and discussed her work, a blizzard took hold and began plaguing Utgard. He overheard some jötnar men discussing it.
- Jotun 1: When will these damned snows end?
- Jotun 2: When your damned complaining does.
He heard another muse on its possible source.
- Jotun 3: No blizzard has ever blown so long. This reeks of sorcery.
Havi climbed a mountain path to a summit overlooking the city, which appeared to be the source of the blizzard's winds. He approached two jötnar channeling magic through a runestone on the peak.
- Havi: And here are the storm-bringers. Explain this mischief.
- Kala: This tempest is our vengeance.
- Vindr: Cold winds for a cold heart.
- Kala: Three times we asked for Gunlodr's hand! Three times we demanded she choose between us!
- Vindr: Three times my brother's hideous face drove her away.
- Kala: It's YOUR face, shit-wit! We're twins!
- Havi: You conjured this storm because your feelings were hurt?
- Kala: This storm is the storm that rages within us! The noble pain of those wronged in love!
- Havi: The lady said no. Move on.
- Kala: I don't like your tone, Aesir. You think you're better than us, just like she did. Maybe it's time to shut your mouth.
- Havi: Why don't you come and try?
The twins attacked, taking turns to boast.
- Kala: Utgard will be buried beneath the snows of our fury!
- Vindr: Your bones will be swallowed by ice!
- Kala: We will not stop till Utgard is no more!
Havi killed both brothers. With their deaths, the magic ebbed out of the runestone and the blizzard abated.
- Havi: The skies have cleared. The blizzard is over at last.
Later, Havi overheard some jötnar women gossiping about the incident at a tavern.
- Jotun 4: Did you hear? That blizzard was all on account of some angry suitors Gunlodr rejected.
- Jotun 5: Men! Do they ever really grow up, or do they just increase their ability to do damage?
He heard another complain about the loss of the snowblind.
- Jotun 6: O, It was so much easier to sneak around behind Grognir's back when you couldn't see your hand in front of your face.
Near Gunlodr's Grotto, Havi overheard a skald mock the brothers in song.
- Skald: Two mighty Jotnar dwelt close to the sky. Their faces the same, they bewildered the eye.
They came down to Utgard, fair Gunlodr to try. "Marry us, Gunlodr." But Gunlodr said "Why?"
"My books are my husbands, I've no need of more. Your breath is appalling, your manners are poor."
"You boast of your might, but it's minds I adore. So thank you for coming, now there is the door."
Outcome[edit | edit source]
Havi defeated both Jötnar in battle after which the storm subsided.
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
Although the runestone will be covered in lightning if the player approaches, this memory is only available in earnest after the initial conversation with Gunlodr during A Feast to Remember. After walking outside with her, the telltale blizzard begins and the memory's symbol will appear on the map over the runestone, where the two brothers load into the game.
While the ambient dialogue lines list the speaker names as "Jotun," they will play using random human NPCs. Two of them require two men and two women to be next to each other in order to trigger. Fortunately, the area inside and around Utgard's Fighting Pit has several such NPCs in close enough proximity to trigger these lines consistently. Some of them are worded as though they should play after the storm is stopped, but they will play at any point. The earliest listed lines will no longer be available after the memory is complete, and this page has been arranged with this in mind. The skald who mocks the brothers in song will always speak at a bench above Gunlodr's Grotto.
