Isle of Skye's Apple of Eden
|
I wanted to ask you something. Which is... what's your name? This article title is conjecture. Although the article subject is canon, no official name for it has been given. |
Isle of Skye's Apple of Eden was one of several Apples of Eden, leftover pieces of technology created by the Isu.
Owners[edit | edit source]
- Isu (? – ?)
- Eivor Varinsdottir (c. 880s)
- Kassandra (c. 880s)
Functionality[edit | edit source]
The Apple appeared to have the standard abilities of an Apple of Eden, such as conjuring tangible illusions and mind control. While activated, it was able to induce insanity and cause mental illnesses, as well as inflict most of the Isle of Skye's inhabitants with nightmares. The Apple's corruptive influence created mentally ill and erratic individuals, which ranged from raving homicidal lunatics to crazed insomniacs, all of whom were killing each other.[1]
This Apple in particular seemed to possess capabilities similar to the Atlantis artifacts, as it tried to transform Eivor Varinsdottir into an unknown beast right after she grabbed it. However, Eivor and Kassandra's combined efforts were able to counter its powers and prevent the transformation.[2]
The Apple appeared to be semi-sentient, as it somehow "felt" threatened when it detected Kassandra's presence. Its powers utilized her past to create the specific physical illusions and nightmares in most of the residents of the island, in order to prevent Kassandra from seizing it and, eventually, destroying it.[1][3][2]
History[edit | edit source]
At an unknown point in time, the Apple was locked away in the Cave of Gold, a small Isu temple on the Isle of Skye.[2] During the Viking expansion in the late 9th century CE, the Apple activated itself[3] once the Spartan mercenary Kassandra landed on the island's shores as part of her worldwide search for Pieces of Eden.[4] Upon Kassandra's arrival, the Apple began to affect the minds of the island's inhabitants, who were ravaged by horrible nightmares, with some of them even going mad from the artifact's control.[3]
The Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir came to the Isle of Skye to find the cause of the nightmares, at the behest of Valka and Edyt,[5] and met Kassandra during her investigation. Both agreed to help the other, in search of the "artifact".[1]
Despite some revelations and secrets, which caused mistrust between the two, both Kassandra and Eivor eventually found the artifact's location in the Cave of Gold,[3] where Eivor collected five shards needed for the cave's pedestal, which concealed its entrance.[6] Dealing with puzzles and ambushes within the cave itself, Eivor and Kassandra found themselves surrounded by the artifact's illusions of Kassandra's past.[2]

Upon first sight, Eivor took notice of the Apple, while Kassandra remained emotionally distraught from one of the illusions. As the Apple pulsated, Eivor grabbed it, only for the artifact to prove too powerful for her to handle, nearly transforming her into an unknown beast. Eivor soon called for Kassandra, who came running to her aid and held the Apple to contain its power, creating a ghostly yellow phantom near them. Through a combination of Kassandra's strong Isu heritage and Eivor's heritage from the Isu Odin, the two were ultimately able to disarm and deactivate the Apple.[2]
Holding the now inert Apple in her hand, Eivor shrugged off nearly being killed by it and gave the artifact to Kassandra to keep.[2] Kassandra later presumably destroyed it, as she had done with every other Piece of Eden she had come across.[7]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
Although this artifact is confirmed to be certainly an Apple of Eden, the fact that it also possesses several functions from the Atlantis artifacts is inconsistent. During IGN's "Live @ Gamescom 2018" interview, Assassin's Creed: Odyssey's game director Scott Philips mentioned that players would be able to recognize several classic Assassin's Creed elements, such as the Apples of Eden, once they defeat the mythical creatures.[8] However, the Assassin's Creed: The Essential Guide explains that the Atlantis artifacts only resemble the Apples, but are a different set of Isu artifacts with separate abilities.[9] Whether this information has been retconned or not remains to be confirmed.
