The Wholesome Warrior was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Basim Ibn Ishaq in 2020 through the Portable Animus HR-8.5, in which a vision of one of Odin's memories could be seen.
Description[edit | edit source]
Havi repeatedly fought and defeated a dead warrior, Skjaldmær.
Dialogue[edit | edit source]
Venturing through Kaldstad, Havi saw and entered a cave in the middle of the region. Inside, he read a note besides a corpse.
Memories of Me
- I am not who I was. Not all that I was. My memories are ashes blown along the wind.
I live among the dead, that much I know, but there's something more than unnatural to this half-life.
Next, Havi activated an enormous sword while noticing a head on the ground. Instantly, Havi heard and noticed the corpse arise with no arms and head. Havi and the corpse began to fight.
- Skjaldmær: Ahh! No!
- Havi: The divided shieldmaiden doth live! Or suffers a kind of half-life!
Havi bested the warrior as smoke appeared and the warrior disappeared.
- Havi: I am reminded that the rules of death are different here.
Havi left the cave and continued on his campaign. After a while, Havi came through the region again and entered the cave again. There, he activated the sword again and the corpse rose back with arms and an axe.
- Skjaldmær: No! No more... There's little of me left...
Havi and the warrior fought once more.
- Skjaldmær: I'll fight you... I'll fight you... while there's breath in me yet!
- Havi: I am not your butcher, but I will cut you down if I have to!
Havi defeated her again and she instantly dissipated.
- Havi: Her will was strong. She deserves a better fate.
The next time, Havi ventured through Kaldstad again and entered the cave. He activated the grand sword and the warrior came back with a shield and a spear to fight.
- Skjaldmær: I am not your thrall! My thoughts are my own!
They begin to fight again.
- Havi: I take your life to preserve my own... but I think you'll be the better for it. What purpose drives you? Is this a curse, or some hellish design?
Havi killed the warrior again and left the cave. On his fourth time entering the cave, Havi activated the sword and fought against a more intense version of the warrior. Besting her again, Havi saw that the warrior regain her complete body.
- Havi: She has been made whole... Fighting completes her!
Havi spoke to her as she responded with a gravely voice.
- Havi: Stay your hand, shieldmaiden! I'm not your tormentor.
- Skjaldmær: I know that now, and I thank you for making me whole.
- Havi: A painful favor, but fruitful in the end. How did you come by this odd healing ability? Is it a quality of this place?
- Skjaldmær: I was human before Hel... changed me. She didn't wield the instruments but her will doubtlessly guided them.
- Havi: Warriors who grow stronger through death would make a formidable army. Are there many more like you?
- Skjaldmær: I know not. I feel parts of my memory have been hacked away. But I'll not forget my debt to you.
Havi obtained the permanent favor, Summoned Courage, while the warrior left the cave.
Outcome[edit | edit source]
After defeating the warrior four times, the Summoned Courage permanent favor is unlocked, allowing Havi to regain 50% health upon death a single time during a run. The warrior fully regains control of her body and leaves the cave to freely roam the realm.
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
On the next run, Havi can talk to the shieldmaiden after making the leap into Kaldstad, where her real name is revealed to be Hervor. She will ask for arrows, and then Havi may give her either 3, 6, 9, or no arrows. If the player chooses to give arrows, Hervor will fight by Havi's side for a period of time. On subsequent runs, she may be encountered in the next two regions.
