Romeo and Aethelflaed was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan in 2020 through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.
A boy needs help with matters of the heart.
Eivor stepped onto the grounds of The Nun's Minster and observed a boy atop an the scaffolding attached to the minster's roof, while another group of children looked on.
- Eivor: What is that boy doing all the way up there?
- Anglo-Saxon Child (Boy 1): Jump, little flea! Jump, flea! Jump!
- Anglo-Saxon Child (Girl 1): Stop it, you grubkin. If he falls, God will punish you.
- Anglo-Saxon Child (Boy 2): Go on, Esobert! It's yours for the taking!
- Anglo-Saxon Child (Girl 2): He's so brave! Like a young King Aelfred!
- Anglo-Saxon Child (Girl 1): He's going to fall. O, my days, I can't look.
- Anglo-Saxon Child (Boy 2): He'll crack his head like a fresh hen's egg!
Eivor climbed up, hearing the boy declare his intentions.
- Esobert: I'm going to do it! You see if I don't. I'm just screwing my courage to the sticky place.
O, it is high. Why is it so high? If I die, tell her I think only of her.
I will show her I love her! Or die trying!
Atop the roof, Eivor found a letter he had written.
Tearstained Letter
- Æthelflæd, your eyes are like
A pool of rainy water
Deep
And your hair is like my favorite goat's beard
When I saw you
Walking in the square
My heart hurt as bad as when I got the toothache
From chewing on a rotten turnip
I love you
Do you love me?
Please respond Yes or No
Yours forever, Esobert
Eivor approached the boy.
- Eivor: What are you doing all the way up here?
- Esobert: Don't try and stop me. I will get that flower... and then she'll see how much I love her.
- Eivor: A brave choice, little fellow.
- Esobert: Even if I get smashed on the ground like an... an... overripe plum... I am just getting my breath back. The climb was hard. I'm girding my erm... loins...
- Eivor: Loins, eh? Or I could get it for you? I would hate to see such a ferocious flame snuffed out.
- Esobert: I mean, if you insist. But I could get it if I wanted to. Just so you know.
Eivor observed on her target on the oak tree's branch while Esobert climbed down, then she used the zipline.
Eivor landed on the tree branch and plucked a flower from it.
- Anglo-Saxon Child (Boy 2): Saints alive! Did you see that? God sent Esobert an angel!
- Anglo-Saxon Child (Girl 1): Is it over? Did he fall? God's buttered crumpets, I never told him I loved him.
- Anglo-Saxon Child (Boy 2): That stranger got it for him. Oi, that's cheating!
- Anglo-Saxon Child (Boy 1): She missed, the stranger missed! That could've been Esobert's mangled noggin.
- Anglo-Saxon Child (Boy 2): What a terrible show, boo, boo...!
Eivor climbed back up and tried again.
With the flower in hand, Eivor approached Esobert.
- Esobert: If I'd known it was that easy...
- Eivor: You'd have done it yourself. Risked life and limb. But great men know the value of a champion.
She handed him the flower.
- Eivor: What will you do with such a treasure?
Esobert pointed to girl.
- Esobert: It is for her. It is all for her, so she will finally notice me.
He breathed in and approached the girl and her mother. He gave the flower to the girl.
- Ealhswith: Æthelflæd? What do you say to the sweet boy?
- Æthelflæd: Thank you for the flower. It is very beautiful.
- Esobert: Now we are bethrothed, and I will grow up to be a great king and you will be my fair lady.
- Ealhswith: What say you, daughter? Do you think him a worthy suitor? He risked so much to declare his love. I will tell my husband, the king, you claim our daughter's hand. When you are a bit older of course. Come dearest.
The queen and princess left, and Esobert rejoined his friends.
- Anglo-Saxon Child (Boy 2): Noah's holy cattle! You actually gave a flower to the princess!
- Esobert: And now we are bethrothed.
- Anglo-Saxon Child (Girl 2): Takes more than that. There's holding hands and grunting. And then sometimes praying... "O, God! O, God!"
- Esobert: King Esobert the first. The Flea of Wincestre!
- Anglo-Saxon Child (Boy 2): All hail the Lord of the Saxons. Esobert the Flea!
Nearby, Eivor found another letter from Esobert to Æthelflæd.
Heartfelt Love Poem
- I am so lucky in love, blessed by the baby Jesus to have seen you from afar
Did you see me? I was wearing my best shoes
I hope one day you will be beside me
Together in love
Starlight to my moon
Bee to my honey
I have been struck by the horse and cart of love
Might I die if you do not look at me?
Yes
Eivor acquired the flowers and gave them to the boy, who presented them to his crush.
It is possible to reach the branch containing the flower from the rooftops on the opposite side of the tree, then climbing over the top of the tree's trunk. If done this way, the dialogue is treated the same as if Eivor used the zipline successfully.
