The Cryptic Tutelage of Hildiran was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan in 2020 through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.
Description[edit | edit source]
After completing three first challenges, Eivor continued her training.
Dialogue[edit | edit source]
Eivor journeyed far, into Snotinghamscire near Odin's Hovel and to the bank of the River Thames across from the Lolingestone Bandit Camp to meditate at two more Valkyrie statues, beginning two more journeys into Hugrheim. She completed the trials and filled the amulet with more of her accumulated battle energy.
- Eivor: I should return to Hildiran.
Eivor returned to Hildiran at her homestead on Ravensthorpe's eastern border.
- Eivor: Hildiran, I return.
- Hildiran: Yes. Very good. Your skills are improving.
- Eivor: There is a reason I'm doing this, yes?
- Hildiran: Of course! All will be revealed once we manage to open Freyja's Gate.
- Eivor: What lies beyond? You seem to know much about it.
- Hildiran: I know much about many things, Wolf-Kissed.
- Eivor: You dodge my questions like they are arrows.
- Hildiran: You ask questions like you have a right to the answers. Keep training, Eivor. There is a reason to all of this. Patience.
Eivor left to continue her battle meditation training. She found two more Valkyrie statues on the island near the Templebrough Fort in Ledecestrescire and looking over Calleva Outpost on the border of Hamtunscire and Suthsexe. She completed the trials with the same skill and wisdom that carried her through the previous three.
- Eivor: I am finally finished. These answers had better be worth the effort.
Eivor returned to Hildiran at Ravensthorpe.
- Hildiran: Eivor. You return.
- Eivor: I have completed my training.
She handed the old woman Freya's medallion, charged with battle energy.
- Hildiran: So you have. Walk with me.
They walked towards the gate, which had been further excavated to reveal a large stone door decorated with a stylized triquetra and featuring the same Elder Futhark runes on the medallion.
- Hildiran: I have been busy while you have been running around. The last of the rock has been cleared. Now you will see the full entryway.
- Eivor: This was here the whole time? We built our settlement so close to it and had no idea.
- Hildiran: There are no coincidences when the gods are involved. Everything happens as needed.
Eivor approached the door and inspected it.
- Eivor: I cannot see how to open it.
- Hildiran: That is because Freyja built it so that only someone with the strength and will of the All-Father himself could open it.
- Eivor: Ah, so that is why you put me through so many trials.
- Hildiran: Exactly! Now, take this and hold it aloft.
The old woman threw Freyja's medallion to Eivor, who did as instructed. The runes Isaz, Haglaz, and Sowilō glowed red, blue, and yellow, respectively, before fading as the triquetra turned white and the stone door grindingly slid down to open. The women entered the cave and found a main room with an orb on a pedestal and three smaller niches in the back covered in frigid mist, vines, and a falling stream of fire.
- Hildiran: There. That is what we have come for. Reach out and take the orb, Eivor.
The item began glowing and briefly hovered before returning to the pedestal. Eivor grabbed it.
- Hildiran: Good. Now hand it to me.
- Eivor: What does it do?
She gave Hildiran the orb.
- Hildiran: This is Odin's Eye. It will act as a compass for us to find the next location.
- Eivor: Next location? This wasn't the treasure you needed?
- Hildiran: I do need it! It will lead us to Odin's vault.
Eivor's suspicions grew.
- Eivor: I feel like I've been used.
- Hildiran: Maybe you have. But you are stronger and now have access to my weapons and armor. Seems like it was worth it. Continue to train. Hugrheim will always be open to you. Visit me should you wish to see my collection again.
Hildiran left the cave. Eivor approached the archway of fog and read the inscription on the broken Isu block.
- Warriors fight to impress, only half can go.
Odin's Mead Hall awaits the Einherjar,
Freyja's Fields take the rest.
Eivor approached the archway of vines and read the broken Isu block.
Eivor approached the archway of fire and read the broken Isu block.
- Master of Hugrheim served her War Lord faithfully,
Until the day she chose to turn from his instructions and abandoned her duty.
Eivor made to leave the room when she saw a final Isu block across from the Vault's entryway.
Outcome[edit | edit source]
Eivor completed all of the challenges in Hugrheim and opened Freyja's Gate. Inside, she retrieved Odin's Eye and was told that it would lead to greater treasures in Odin's Vault.
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
The first note that Eivor reads is an excerpt from the poem Grímnismál in the Poetic Edda, in which a disguised Odin tells the human boy Agnarr Geirröðsson about the gods' duties, while the second note about Völuspá is an excerpt from the poem of the same name which is also in the Poetic Edda.
