The King of Rats was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.
Description[edit | edit source]
Eivor investigates a dungeon.
Dialogue[edit | edit source]
Eivor traveled through the northern district of Paris and found a training hall for the soldiers along the western buildings. Inside, she found a note reporting on some suspicious activity.
Guard Report
- Captain,
We have uncovered strange activity in the abandoned one-storey house along the curtain walls, just east of the northern gate.
If you will send an extra patrol, we will investigate right away.
– the Gate Watch
Eivor followed the northern curtain walls leading east and found a suspicious house, where a soldier standing watch had mysteriously perished. Two more guards stood inside over a boarded up entrance to a cellar, oblivious to the other soldier's fate.
- French Soldier 1: Come on, Bertin's been gone for too long. That fool is dead! Me and you, we can get that damned King of Rats.
- French Soldier 2: I have a bad feeling there will be a trap waiting for us. You can't take the Rat King lightly...
The soldiers turned hostile at the sight of a Norse raider without a second thought. Eivor dealt with the pair and broke the boards, making her way down a ladder into an ancient Roman sewer. Down below, she found the corpse of another soldier. Eivor opened a nearby door and found a large swarm of rats surrounding a skeleton sitting on a throne in the center of a makeshift throne room. She repelled the rats with melee attacks long enough to retrieve a note.
Stained Note
- More of those miscreants who pledged their services to me turned traitor. I hear whispers in the tunnels—they fear me, they think I'm mad, and they plot against me. Did they not hear the screams of those before? My pets had a grand time, though the bones were troublesome to clear.
These men are worse than rats. Disloyal to the bone. It's my fault, I suppose, for allowing them into my tunnels.
I will show them what it takes to be a Rat King. My pets will eat well—every piece of tender meat I can give them. Once the poison takes me and my body lies warm and fresh, they will eat their best meal yet.
Learning how the reign of the Rat King came to an end, Eivor swept the area for valuables and escaped before the rats returned to their sewer palace.
Outcome[edit | edit source]
Eivor learned of the Rat King and his demise.
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
The Rat King, much like the "ghost" of Germain of Paris, is never encountered directly by the player. Rather, his story is told through ambient NPC dialogue and notes scattered throughout the environment at major locations, and this memory simply serves as the endpoint of that story.
