Plot synopsis
Sun's guests—his nephew Xiao Han and his fellow warriors Liu Qing and Xue Yan—arrive on the floating gambling hall and meet with him. On a ship outside, Shimazu Saito wakes up on the deck before throwing up seawater. Across from her, Edward Kenway greets her while stating that he saved her from drowning for her to divulge information. Saito immediately tries to attack Edward but he quickly stops her, slams her on the deck, activates his Hidden Blade, and stabs at Saito.
On Sun's gambling hall, John Young, posing as Edward Kenway, continues to gorge down on the ship's refreshments and food before drinking a hangover cure created by female server Xialun Qing. John begins to flatter her and even nears in for a kiss before being disrupted by ruckus outside his room. He looks over and sees the staff being attacked by the ninjas allied with Madam Lee. Readying his pistol, he tells Qing to hide while running to find Edward.
Saito watches as Edward's blade strikes to the left of her head. Edward explains he has no plans to kill her despite her contract to assassinate him. Hesitating, Saito attacks Edward with a fury and accuses him of sparing her because of her womanhood. Kicking him back into the mast, Saito holds her sword to his neck and demands to know why he spared her. Edward admits that she reminds him of an old friend whom he had lost and how both of them fought despite the weight it bore down on them. Saito asks why he is so willing to ally with her. He explains that they both need to each other and how they are both after the same artifact. She agrees to the truce until they discover the treasure. Edward soon asks for Hendrik's sea log but Saito responds that she gave it to Sun as compensation to save her men.
Soon, both Saito and Kenway hear gunshots at the ship and conclude that Sun may be under attack and that the sea log is in jeopardy. Both rush to the ship. Meanwhile, Sun shows the sea log to Xiao and states that none of the cryptography experts he hired could decipher it. However, Xiao states the language has been passed down from their people but it will take time to decipher it. Ecstatic, Sun takes back the sea log and exclaims at the treasures they will uncover. Xiao asks what he intends to do with the treasure, to which Sun explains that an artifact from "Those Who Came Before" is not to be trifled with and he intends to gift it to the Qing Emperor. Sun expects to be rewarded well as well as pardoning Xiao's people.
However, Xiao throws a rope dart at his uncle and entangles Sun's wrist before slamming him down on the floor. Xiao reprimands his uncle for being the Emperor's lap dog while Sun looks at his mangled hand. While Xiao's compatriots take off their disguises, Xiao declares his uncle to be an enemy to their long-standing creed and intends to execute Sun in the name of the Assassin Brotherhood.
