Plot summary
Following the attack on the Mandarin's House, Edward Kenway and Lee Huiyin sit down for tea and talk. Lee begins by asking what the Assassins' intent in Macau is, to which Edward responds by questioning Lee's motives for acquiring Hendrik's sea log. After pointing out that they share a common enemy in the ninja that attacked them both, Edward suggests that it would be best if they both stopped keeping secrets from each other. Lee agrees and reveals that she discovered the existence of both the Assassins and Templars through her trade network. While having no interest in their ongoing conflict, she was initially willing to work with either side as long as it benefited her business. Edward remarks that this is similar to his way of thinking when he first became aware of the Assassin-Templar conflict, before he discovered the Templars' true goals, but keeps these thoughts for himself.
Lee continues to explain that after several Dutch East India Company ships went missing in the Straits of Malacca, her company was framed for the incident, causing her business to suffer. As a result, she began looking for new sources of profit and eventually took an interest in the largely unexplored region of Indochina. That was when Hendrik, looking for a way to return to the lost city of the Khmer Empire he had discovered, approached Lee's company to ask them to sponsor an expedition there. Lee turned Hendrik down, believing the idea to be absurd, but was secretly intrigued by the sailor's tales of the riches he had allegedly found, and thus decided to keep an eye on him. Following Hendrik's death, Lee purchased his log from the bank where he had been keeping it, intending to hold on to it as collateral.
As Edward and Lee take a stroll outside, the latter continues to recount her story. She reveals that, not long after her purchase of Hendrik's log, she was approached by a man who claimed to be speaking on behalf of her rival trading companies. The man, secretly a Templar, demanded the log in exchange for ceasing all interference against Lee's business, but she refused, suspecting the log to be more valuable than she had thought at first.
As Lee finishes her story, she realizes that the Templars are serious about finding Angkor and that they never intended to hold their end of the bargain with her. After Edward reveals that the Templars are the ones who killed Hendrik and that they are likely working with Lee's business rivals, he proposes an alliance since they share a common enemy. In exchange for dealing with the Templars, which should also weaken Lee's rivals, and recovering Hendrik's log, Edward asks Lee to sponsor his expedition to find Angkor. Lee agrees and Edward departs to meet up with John Young, who arrives to pick him up with his ship.
Elsewhere, Shimazu Saito discovers that all the information in Hendrik's log pertaining to Angkor is encrypted. Deducing that the cipher needed to decode it is in Edward's possession, they orders their men to find and capture the Assassin.
