Plot synopsis
Thanks to Jan van Aert's distraction, the Zhang Wei Union members are able to lose the Spanish fleet pursuing them and escape Manila. The following day, after the Manila riot has been quenched, the Lieutenant Governor-General laments that the Union members and Jan's crew escaped with stolen Spanish supplies. Just then, Madam Lee arrives, accompanied by Zheng and her workers, to discuss a business opportunity.
After the Lieutenant Governor blames the Dutch East India Company for the riot, Lee claims that the company will not stop until they have driven the Spanish out of the Philippines. When the Lieutenant Governor points out that the Qing Empire is no different, Lee says that the European powers do not compare to the might of the Great Qing and that her company wishes to trade with the Spanish. However, in exchange, she asks that her ships be allowed free passage to the Southern Seas. She then gives the Lieutenant Governor some time to consider her offer, pointing out that he has a great deal to earn from it.
Elsewhere, the Union members discover that the Spanish have confiscated all of their food rations, prompting them to attack two passing schooners to acquire provisions. Although Edward Kenway only wishes to scare the two ships' crews into surrender with warning shots, the Fenghuang's cannons end up sinking the schooners in just a few shots. After rescuing the survivors and salvaging all the loot they can, the Union members dock at a nearby island, where the natives instantly recognize them. As Edward talks with the village's chief, she reveals that Zhang has begun trading with them and that several of her men wish to join the Union.
Later, as Yun Pyeong-Gyu and Xialun Qing attempt to recreate the formula for Greek fire, Rupiya plans out the crew's course to Cebu. After Rupiya shows Edward the route he has settled on, the village chief interrupts them and reveals that one of the islands in their path, Monkey Island, has recently become the subject of unsettling tales regarding vampires and the disappearances of passing ships. Meanwhile, while checking the supplies they have received from the villagers, John Young is attacked by an unseen animal that has snuck aboard the Fenghuang.
Back in Manila, after the Lieutenant Governor decided to accept Lee's offer, the businesswoman tells Zheng that she will be able to resume her search for Angkor's treasure without difficulties. Just then, Xiao Han, Liu Qing, and Xue Yan arrive, having finished their investigation in the city. After Xiao Han reveals what they have learned—that a monk used an amulet to incite the riot and that the artifact was stolen by the leader of a native resistance—he claims that he will intercept the native warriors before they reach Cebu and recover the relic. As Lee praises Xiao Han for his cunningness, she tells him that he has free reign to do as he pleases.
