Plot synopsis
Following their arrrest, the Fenguang's crew are forced to remain inside their ship, which is closely watched by guards. John Young informs the others that, from what he was able to gather from some locals' gossip, six years prior a riot broke out in Manila after the Governor-General, Fernando Manuel de Bustillo Bustamante y Rueda, had the Archbishop Francisco de la Cuesta arrested and imprisoned. The archbishop's supporters stormed the Governor-General's mansion and killed him in the streets, and now Spain suspects that the riot was an elaborate plot by the Dutch East India Company to keep its power in check.
Deciding to take matters into their own hands, the crew escape from the ship after Xialun Qing distracts the guards by bringing them food. Edward Kenway and Shimazu Saito head off to rescue Jan van Aert and his crew, and the former interrogates a soldier, learning that Jan's crew is being held in the dungeon underneath Fort Santiago. After retrieving his confiscated weapons, Edward climbs to the top of the Manila Cathedral to survey the area and locate the fort. He then leaps into a cart of hay below and instructs Saito to return to the Fenghuang while he takes advantage of an ongoing protest to infiltrate the fort. However, Saito senses something amiss nearby and decides to investigate.
Inside his cell, Jan laments his fate when suddenly Edward arrives to rescue him and his crew. As the group make their way out of the fort, Edward informs Jan that they will be sailing away from Manila at the same time to divide the Spanish Navy's attention. The Assassin then asks Jan if he really was behind the Governor-General's murder, but before the navigator can respond, they both hear a commotion outside and see that the protest in the streets has turned into a full-blown riot.
Edward spots Saito observing the riot and goes to speak to her, leaving Jan and his crew behind. When the Assassin asks Saito why she did not return to the Fenghuang, she tells him that she saw that the monk leading the riot is wearing a crescent-shaped amulet which appears to be influencing the masses. Recalling the story of Ferdinand Magellan, Edward becomes excited as he realizes that the amulet is the Piece of Eden they've been looking for.
