Plot summary
Edward Kenway follows the Japanese pirates to a temple, where they enter speaking Cantonese, confusing Edward. Using his Eagle Vision, Edward notices the temple is well-guarded and looks for a way to infiltrate it. He spots two pirates outside the temple walls and dispatches them silently before taking one of their disguises. Entering the temple, he blends in with the guards, but notices that some of them are wearing different uniforms. He concludes the pirates have split themselves into two factions: those originating from Japan and those native to the Qing Empire.
Maintaining his cover, Edward walks through the temple's courtyard until reaching an altar, where Sun is conversing with Shimazu Saito. Taking a guard's shift, Edward positions himself close in order to eavesdrop on the conversation. With the Far East Company's ship detained, Sun asks Saito and her team to recover its seized opium shipment by any means necessary. To reassure Saito, he promises that her family will benefit greatly once Lee Huiyin and the European foreigners have been driven out of Macau, allowing Sun's merchants to dominate the market.
Accepting the mission, Saito mobilizes her ninja as they prepare to make their move on the Far East Company's ship at midnight. Deciding to join them, Edward blends into the team and keeps an watchful eye, noticing that there is a rift forming between the Japanese and Cantonese ninja. Meanwhile, a ninja asks Saito if their task may prove harmful, to which the leader reminds him that the mission will serve as an opportunity to purge the clan's weak links.
At night, Saito and her ninja attack the guards defending the Far East Company's ship while Edward sneaks around and enters the ship alone. He finds himself in the gunpowder storage room and starts to empty a barrel on the floor. With a candle in hand, he prepares to ignite the gunpowder, but is stopped by Saito. Holding a sword to his neck, Saito becomes angry upon recognizing the Assassin.
