Plot synopsis
After Alan Jacob orders his fleet to eliminate the pirates attempting to steal the Piece of Eden in the East India Company's possession, the British ships open fire on the Fenghuang and the rest of the Zhang Wei Union's vessels. Rupiya comments on the enemy ships' superior firepower, prompting Edward Kenway to remark that the Royal Navy is unlike any other faction they have faced. Realizing they stand no chance of winning the battle, the Union members decide to retreat.
As cannon fire hits the ship they are on, John Young drops the bag he is holding and Shimazu Saito swiftly catches it, only to discover that it is empty. John then kicks Saito overboard and flees with the artifact, which he kept hidden on his person the entire time. Left dangling from a rope, Saito curses John and is approached by Nagamasa, who informs her of the Company fleet's attack. Reluctantly, Saito decides to abandon her pursuit of John and instructs Nagamasa and his crew to retreat alongside the Fenghuang.
Watching the Union members attempt to flee the battle, Alan, unwilling to leave any "loose ends", orders his men to chase and eliminate them. Immediately, three frigates are dispatched to sink the Fenghuang; however, just as they begin to close the distance, the frigates are sunk by a volley of cannon fire. Looking towards the source of the attack, Edward and Rupiya see that the cannon fire came from Jeong's fleet, which has stumbled upon the engagement by chance. As Jeong orders her crew to sink both the Fenghuang and the Company's fleet, Alan, outraged by the pirates' interference, instructs his men to return fire.
