Plot synopsis[edit | edit source]
Drawn by John Young's screams of terror, Edward Kenway, Rupiya, and Yun Pyeong-Gyu rush to see what has happened, finding that John has been attacked by a baby monkey. As the group laughs at John's predicament, the navigator struggles to get rid of the monkey and calls out to Shimazu Saito for help, only for the samurai to ignore him. Eventually, Xialun Qing is able to calm down the agitated monkey and cradles it until it falls asleep. Deducing that the monkey has lost its parents, John suggests that they take it in.
At nightfall, the Fenghuang departs the village and begins its voyage to Cebu. Finding John alone on the ship's deck, Edward asks him why he is not with Qing, to which John reveals that his lover is assisting Yun with his experiments. As the navigator reflects on his feelings for Qing, he asks Edward if he ever felt the same way, to which the Assassin explains how he gave up his life of piracy to settle down and start a family. John then explains that, when he saw Qing cradle the monkey, he envisioned her doing the same with their child one day, and that he is considering settling down with her. However, he is uncertain whether he will turn out to be a decent father and not a miserable deadbeat.
Hearing this, Edward tells John that no one is born a perfect husband and father and reveals that he originally abandoned his family for the life at sea. Fortunately, after his first wife's death, he was able to find love again with Tessa and now he is trying to make up for his past mistakes by being a good husband to her and a good father to his daughter Jennifer.
As John tells Edward that he has made up his mind about his future with Qing, the Fenghuang is suddenly bombarded with mortar fire. Rupiya is able to steer the ship to safety and Edward instructs him to take cover behind some rocks. Watching from a fort on the nearby island, Rajah orders his warriors to deal with the "trespassers" and uses the crescent amulet to empower them. As Edward remarks that the crew is trapped and that they need to learn where the mortar fire came from, Qing offers a solution and reveals her and Yun's latest invention: a hot air balloon.
