Plot synopsis[edit | edit source]
The Fenghuang catches up to the East India Company ship carrying John Young in the Strait of Malacca. On Yun Pyeong-Gyu's signal, the crew members fire their cannons at the enemy vessel, damaging its stern and forcing it to stop and return fire. John deduces this to be a trap and tries to warn the ship's captain, but he is ignored. Moments later, Nagamasa's ship and two Ayutthayan boats approach the Company vessel from the opposite side and use their harpoons to immobilize it. While the British sailors try cutting the ropes, Shimazu Saito, Nagamasa's men, and the Ayutthayan warriors close the distance and board the Company ship.
Saito orders her crew to show no mercy and they begin slaughtering the British sailors. Amidst the chaos, Saito spots John and gives chase, accusing the navigator of betraying the Zhang Wei Union for his own selfish gain. John grabs a musket and blocks Saito's attack before retorting that the latter would have never joined the Union in the first place if she did not have her own interests at heart.
Claiming that Saito should understand his position better than anyone else, John tells her that she would not hesitate to bring back her deceased friends if given the chance. Saito is briefly taken aback by this comment and stops her attack, just as John intended. Taking advantage of Saito's lowered guard, John pushes her back and pulls out a pistol, but the samurai dodges his shot. John then grabs the bag containing the Piece of Eden and threatens to drop it overboard, claiming that if he cannot bring back Xialun Qing, he does not care what happens to either the artifact or himself. Saito falls for John's bluff and, unwilling to risk losing the Piece of Eden, the two are left at an impasse.
Meanwhile, Edward Kenway and the rest of the Fenghuang's crew also reach the East India Company ship. Before they can board it, however, they witness a volley of cannon fire flying overheard, which narrowly misses them. Looking towards the source of the attack, Edward witnesses the arrival of an entire Company fleet commanded by Alan Jacob, who is intent on eliminating the pirates.
