Assassin's Creed: The Fall is a 2010-2011 comic book written by Cameron Stewart and Karl Kerschl. Initially published in three issues by WildStorm Comics and later by Ubiworkshop, it depicted the late-19th and early-20th century journeys of the Russian Assassin Nikolai Orelov, whose genetic memories were viewed by his present-day descendant Daniel Cross. A sequel comic book entitled Assassin's Creed: The Chain, again following the lives of Daniel Cross and Nikolai Orelov, was announced after San Diego Comic-Con 2011 and released in late July 2012.[1]
A collection volume consisting of both The Fall and The Chain was released on 30 October 2019 under the name Assassin's Creed: The Fall & The Chain, published by Titan Comics.[2] The Fall is expected to have another release with a Prestige Format that collects all three issues featuring new covers and retouched colors.[3]
Description[edit | edit source]
Written by KARL KERSCHL & CAMERON STEWART Art and cover by KARL KERSCHL & CAMERON STEWART The monster-hit, historical fantasy/sci-fi Assassin's Creed video game from Ubisoft breaks into comics with a stunning 3-issue series written and illustrated by acclaimed creators Karl Kerschl (WEDNESDAY COMICS, ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN) and Cameron Stewart (BATMAN AND ROBIN)! ASSASSIN'S CREED: THE FALL follows 19th century Russian assassin Nikolai Orelov as he strives to claim an artifact of immense power from the hands of the Templars, leading to a climactic and violent showdown with the ruthless Tsar Alexander III aboard a speeding train! Meanwhile, in modern times, a troubled young drifter copes with unsettling visions of a possible past life—visions that have irreversible consequences for the present. ASSASSIN'S CREED: THE FALL is an exciting new chapter in the popular series that no fan will want to miss![4]
Development[edit | edit source]
In an interview with IGN, Stewart said that the series was initially planned to expand on the Italian Assassin Ezio Auditore's travels, but it was moved to an entirely new setting and character to provide greater artistic freedom to the writers. Despite this, the comic still utilized the long-standing feud between the Assassins and Templars for the basis of its story.[5] Inspiration for The Fall came from the American author Richard Condon's 1959 book The Manchurian Candidate , in which communists brainwashed the American army major Bennett Marco into acting as their sleeper agent whenever he saw the Queen of Diamonds playing card; in The Fall, Abstergo programmed Daniel Cross to kill the Mentor when the moment of opportunity presented itself.[6]

Special editions[edit | edit source]

The Fall had two special edition releases. The first was a 128-page Deluxe Edition that brought together all three issues of The Fall and an exclusive 10-page epilogue that acted as a transition into the sequel, The Chain.[8] It was later included in Ubiworkshop's $60 USD "Assassin's Creed Red Winter" bundle, which paired the comic with a black hoodie featuring the Russian Assassins' insignia.[9]
The second special edition was a compilation titled Assassin's Creed: Subject Four, which contained both The Fall and The Chain for readers to experience as a complete arc. It was included alongside the Assassin's Creed Encyclopedia's second edition to people who preordered the Ubiworkshop Edition of Assassin's Creed III for $100 USD before 4 July.[10][11]
