Forging Bonds was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Basim ibn Ishaq in 2020 through the Portable Animus HR-8.5, in which a vision of one of Odin's memories could be seen.
Description[edit | edit source]
Havi went to find Brokkr and convince him to help with the Salakar.
Dialogue[edit | edit source]
Havi headed towards the funeral preparations outside Hodda Shelter.
- Havi: I must speak with Brokkr.
Once outside, Havi crossed the broken walkway over the lake.
- Havi: The dwarves have come up with a crafty way to cross the lake.
At the funeral site, Havi saw Brokkr and a few attendees nearby the sarcophagus built for Sindri.
- Vesall: Sindri, you son of a rock, where did you hide your tools?
How can I tell Brokkr we're missing the tools?
I'll cut down that oak tree now Sindri is gone. Can't stand the sight of it without him here. - Dwarven Fugitive: I hear Vesall can't find the master's tools. It's too horrible to even think about.
Now Brokkr is all alone. How will he manage without his big brother to guide him?
Last time I saw the master, he was sitting under his oak tree, roasting his acorns, oiling his favorite hammer.
Havi moved closer to Brokkr.
- Havi: I must find a way to ease Brokkr's sorrow. And make him amenable to my wishes.
Havi spoke with Brokkr.
- Brokkr: You lied to me. You said you would save him.
- Havi: I said I would find him.
- Brokkr: That ain't my brother. Not any more.
Havi shook his head and started to walk away.
- Brokkr: What happened? Tell me. Everything.
- Havi: As I neared the village, I... I heard a great roar. Like that of a wounded bear. Soon after, I witnessed the final act of a mighty battle. Sindri beset by giants on all sides. It was he who made the god-like roars.
- Brokkr: He... he always did have a deep voice.
- Havi: He wielded his hammer and chisel with uncommon skill.
- Brokkr: Yes... yes! I have seen him do it many times in the workshop.
- Havi: Giants lay strewn about. Slain by Sindri's hand. But then... One, of cowardly aspect, struck your brother treacherously in the back. Yet even as Sindri succumbed to the blow, he lobbed his chisel and struck the coward dead. Right between the eyes.
- Brokkr: Sindri did all that?
Havi clapped Brokkr on the shoulder.
- Havi: So it will be written.
Havi left Brokkr glad with the fable he spun. He talked with Vesall, who continued his pattern of wails.
- Vesall: Where could they be?
- Havi: Is something wrong, Vesall?
- Vesall: Everything is wrong! We're burying the greatest smith who ever lived and we don't have his tools to put with him.
- Havi: I came across some at Alethorp. If you want I can fetch―
- Vesall: Those were just the spares. He never took his best ones from the shelter.
- Havi: I see. How is it that such valuable instruments have been misplaced?
- Vesall: Misplaced? Don't be daft. Hidden, more like.
- Havi: By Sindri?
- Vesall: To make sure no one else ever touched him. Particularly Brokkr. Except now we can't find them!
- Havi: You have no idea where they might be?
- Vesall: Well, they ain't inside the shelter, I can tell you that. But they can't be too far. Wouldn't be surprised if they're somewhere up high.
- Havi: I thought dwarves were afraid of heights.
- Vesall: Not our Sindri. He was quite the climber. Now me, well, I prefer to keep my feet on the ground. Right where they should be.
Havi left Vesall and passed by Brokkr once more, who was not ready to talk.
- Brokkr: How can I talk with you when my heart is torn asunder?
Havi left to search for Sindri's tools.
- Havi: I am very fond of the dwarves. Yet their constant needs... It is exhausting. Oh Loki, friend, betrayer... What I'd give for a moment of your gilded conversation. Even the lies.
Havi arrived at the hills above the shelter.
- Havi: If I was Sindri, where would I hide my beloved tools? Somewhere high up perhaps?
Havi looked around and found a large oak tree overlooking the valley.
- Havi: A majestic oak... Surely this is Sindri's beloved acorn tree?
Atop the tree he noticed a distinctive nest.
- Havi: That nest looks like a promising hidey-hole. If I had wings, I could reach it easily enough.
Havi used the Hugr-Rip and activated the Power of the Raven. Soon, Havi landed atop the nest and found Sindri's tools.
- Havi: Finally. The tools of Sindri's trade.
Havi picked up the tools.
- Havi: I must reunite these tools with Sindri's remains before the ceremony begins.
Havi returned back to the funeral and placed Sindri's tool upon his sarcophagus.
- Havi: The disaster has been averted.
- Vesall: Now I see why some call you "god."
- Havi: You're making me blush. Still, I have my moments.
He gave a few words honoring Sindri, lies though they were.
- Havi: Heroes die. But not their legacy. Such was Sindri's courage that tonight he feasts in Valhalla, the first of his kind to ever do so.
Havi saw Ivaldi near the table laden with food.
- Havi: Ivaldi has come. Perhaps he can be of use.
Havi spoke with Ivaldi.
- Ivaldi: I'm here for the mead, not the company.
- Havi: You dwarves and your love of mead. It's caused me enough trouble already.
- Ivaldi: It wasn't a dwarf who ransacked half of Jötunheim in search of some mysterious mead.
Havi crossed his arms and scoffed.
- Havi: I wouldn't know anything about that.
Ivaldi shook his head.
- Havi: You know, old friend, now would be a good time for some grand gesture.
- Ivaldi: Like what?
- Havi: A respectful speech from you, Sindri's greatest rival, would surely―
- Ivaldi: Fuck off.
- Havi: We must all make compromises. I can even give you the honeyed words...
Ivaldi walked away from Havi.
- Havi: Time soothes the well of suffering. Brings hope that sees beyond chill death. Recasts the whirlpool of sorrow into the placid waters of the philosophic mind.
- Ivaldi: Are those words for Sindri or Baldr?
- Havi: Baldr lives! Why would he need such words?
- Ivaldi: Of course, of course. I didn't mean to... well, you know.
After a tense moment, Ivaldi pondered his decision.
- Ivaldi: Fine, I'll do the speech. But it will be one of my making, not yours. We dwarves don't care much for poetry. Still, we can't set about making speeches until the torches are all lit up.
Havi started to light the funeral torches.
- Havi: Who knows how long it will take before the dwarves get around to lighting the torches. It will be faster if I do it.
Havi lit all the torches for the funeral.
- Havi: The dwarves have saved a place for me. This is a great honor that they bestow.
Havi joined the dwarves in Sindri's funeral ceremony. A couple dwarves extended condolences to Brokkr as Ivaldi and Havi took their places and they looked at each other. Brokkr stood before the sarcophagus.
- Brokkr: My brother... A true master... He was...
Brokkr paused and choked up slightly. Ivaldi stepped in and started to give his speech.
- Ivaldi: I did not like Sindri and he did not like me. Still, he was good with a hammer. And a chisel. And a saw. And he knew how to work the bellows... some said better than anyone. Even me. Brokkr, your brother was a fine smithy. I... I admired him greatly.
The guest appreciated Ivaldi's words as the ceremony ended. Havi went to speak with Brokkr.
- Havi: Master Brokkr, you've given Sindri an excellent send-off.
- Brokkr: It's the least he deserves... But is it really true he feasts in Valhalla?
- Havi: It is. I saw it in a vision. Come, let's take a stroll.
Brokkr and Havi took a walk as Ivaldi drank and watched them from a distance.
- Havi: Now, tell me, are you prepared to continue Sindri's good work?
- Brokkr: Helping Ivaldi was not my brother's work.
- Havi: But defying Surtr was. It's what got him killed.
- Brokkr: Greed for mead is what got him killed.
- Havi: It took courage to go after that mead. A direct challenge to Surtr's authority.
- Brokkr: This is crooked thinking.
- Havi: Seems straight enough for me.
- Brokkr: ...You know, I don't reckon I owe you a bloody thing.
- Havi: I risked my life to retrieve your brother's body. Now I prepare to risk it again. For you and all of Svartalfheim.
- Brokkr: Bollocks. You ain't doing anything out of the goodness of your heart. I know what you're after. I know all about your lad Baldr. I have ears, you know. Even in my grief. So, don't pretend you're here for us because I―
- Havi: Would you have me abandon my own son and strive only for your salvation?
- Brokkr: Okay, when you say it like that... I... I need time... I'm still grieving, you know. Let me think on it. Alright? A little old think.
The sun rose on a new day as Havi meditated outside near the oak tree.
- Havi: I should check on Brokkr. See if he has come to his senses. If he hasn't, I must... encourage him further.
Outcome[edit | edit source]
Havi helped Brokkr with his funeral service for his late brother, Sindri.
