The Ghost of Saint Germain was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan in 2020 through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.
Description[edit | edit source]
Eivor investigates a haunting.
Dialogue[edit | edit source]
- French Man: There! There! Do you see it? Mon Dieu! (My God!) On the roof of the chapel!
- French Woman 1: Merde! (Shit!) I see it, I see it! The ghost of St. Germain... O! It's true! I will faint.
- French Woman 2: Don't be dramatic! It's just a shadow. Wait... is it? Now I don't know.
Arriving at the chapel, Eivor looked around and found and read an account from a monk.
Monastic Manuscript
- Truly the Saint protects us!
I watched as one of the invaders broke into the Saint's church, shattering glass in all the windows with a cudgel he made from a tree branch. Immediately a seething madness took hold of him, and he died where he stood. The Saint himself hitched him to Eumenides' grim cart, and the sorry wretch's soul was dragged down to hell.
Then I saw another of the wretched Northerners clamber right up the spire of the church. But he misjudged his way and down he tumbled. The holy roof shattered all his bones. It was none other than Germain's doing!
A third rushed forward, his eyes set on the Saint's sepulchre. Truly that was their last sight! Then a fourth came up but the wind knocked him down, and he was also swept from on high down low to hell. A fifth reached the tomb and pried it open, but the very first stone he loosed hit hard his chest. The deadly blow, guided as if the by the Saint's own hand, impelled his soul to forsake its despicable abode and make down its way to sup on the bitter victuals of hell.
At this the plunderers gave up their task and ran, dismayed. It was then that I saw a cloaked figure of Germain atop the blessed church's roof, watching as they fled! O God be praised for this wondrous sight, that I might bear witness to His glory and the work of His holy Saint!
- Brother Bruno
Climbing the chapel's tower, Eivor found a cadaver and a note.
Captain's Orders
- Captain,
My spies have tracked your attacker to the ruined Abbey of Saint Germain just west of Paris.
As you have managed to lose three separate watches to this single unknown assailant, and as a result have left your duty at the excavations unfulfilled, I want you to see to it personally. Search that Abbey, find the assailant, and do not report back until the matter is resolved.
Permanently.
- I.M.
Outcome[edit | edit source]
Eivor discovered the body of a captain of the guard.
