Germain of Paris
Germain (c. 496 – 576), also known as Germain of Paris and venerated as Saint Germain, was the bishop of Paris. By the 880s, he had an abbey dedicated to him,[1] and a legend circulated that he protected the city itself.[2]
Legacy[edit | edit source]
By the 880s, the monks at Saint-Merri had the tradition of leaving the safety of their walls and walking the the circuit of the city bearing Saint Germain's holy casket so he would bless Paris for another year. During the siege, the monks, though fearful, did the circuit and though a Viking invader attempted to stone the procession, the stone turned back and struck his own head, killing him and allowing them to continue the circuit unmolested.[3]
The Hidden One Abbo Cernuus defended the abbey against raiders who broke into the church aiming to steal holy relics from the sepulcher and, being cloaked, was confused with the ghost of Saint Germain. Wanting to keep his dual identity a secret, Abbo let the rumors continue unabated.[4]
