A Prayer for Vengeance was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.
Description
Eivor came across a burial mount that looked to be inhabited.
Dialogue
Eivor approached a tomb set into a hill, where a monk called out to her.
- Mad Monk: Another Dane with blood on their hands. God will punish you, heathen.
She ignored him and investigated the tomb entrance.
- Eivor: This tomb has been opened. It looks like someone lives here.
Eivor got inside the tomb after removing the obstacle in her way. As she stole a key, she heard the monk continue to ramble.
- Mad Monk: I still see their glassy stares when I sleep. I buried them all. My friends. My fellows.
She heard him again when opening a small chest nearby.
- Mad Monk: Do you remember Chertsey Abbey? The deadly sin committed there?
On a table nearby laid a note.
- To God and the Many Martyrs:
To Our Mighty Lord above,
I have ninety-nine vengeances I must carry out. For such is the Holy Work. I swear to you I will not fail.
I counteth ninety and nine souls of Heaven taken by the invading heathen horde. All good monks, whose dirty knees did prostrate for Him and Mary and Jesus.
I must feed the memory of lost saints. For each I have named, for each I have a cross an a lashing upon my body. The ninety-nine marks on me are for the ninety-nine that died and the ninety-nine more I shall take.
Praise be to God and every branch of His making.
Brother Largworth of the Ninety-Nine
She found another note.
- Psalm Scroll from Desperate Monk:
Lord,
Today I am sending more Danes for you to judge.
Let their deaths cleanse their sins.
May your will guide my hand so I keep this holy work to avenge my brothers.
Praise Be To the Deliverer from Evil
- Mad Monk: Bone and sinew, tooth and nail. People splinter apart like dead branches.
When she left the tomb, the monk ambushed her.
- Mad Monk: I was a man of peace, but you taught me a killer's ways!
- Eivor: Hatred has driven you mad!
- Mad Monk: All Danes must die!
- Eivor: I have done you no wrong!
- Mad Monk: You butchered my brothers!
Ninety-nine graves I dug in the hard earth for those you killed. - Eivor: How many have you murdered in this wood?
- Mad Monk: The abbey at Chertsey was a holy place! You defiled it!
- Eivor: Whatever you have suffered, it was not at my hands!
Eivor killed the man.
- Eivor: Your thirst for vengeance led you here. Rest now.
Outcome
Eivor killed the mad monk in battle.
