Fare Thee Well, Aethelstan was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Basim ibn Ishaq in 2020 through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.[1]
Description[edit | edit source]
Eivor had a short meeting with Guthrum.
Dialogue[edit | edit source]
Eivor went to meet with Guthrum at Northwic's longhouse, where him and some civilians erected a cross in a stage outside.
- Guthrum: He faces the rising sun. Good.
- Eivor: So the rumors are true. The Great Conqueror has been conquered himself.
- Guthrum: Eivor! How many summers has it been?
Eivor and Guthrum shook hands.
- Eivor: Far too many, friend.
- Guthrum: Something amuses you?
- Eivor: I hardly recognize you. Is this the Guthrum I left behind, or some other gentler man?
- Guthrum: The Guthrum you knew is indeed no more. Aethelstan, I am now called. My Christian name.
- Eivor: Christian name?
- Guthrum: A new name for a new life.
- Eivor: At the expense of all you gained.
- Guthrum: I have not lost as much as you might think. King Aelfred and I have forged a lasting peace, in fact.
He walked to the stage's edge to overlook the city as Eivor followed.
- Guthrum: He has taken western Mercia. East Anglia is mine. We are now discussing the fates of East Mercia and the North. The Danes, Eivor, are here to stay.
He smiled at this, though Eivor frowned in displeasure.
- Eivor: With Christ as their jarl.
- Guthrum: He is a powerful God. Within his sacrifice hides the greatest boons. Forgiveness, hope, love. Would you not consider hearing his message for yourself?
Eivor shook her head.
- Eivor: I have no time to meet new gods. I am leaving England. And have only come here to say my goodbyes.
- Guthrum: Will you return to your father's land?
- Eivor: Elsewhere. To unmapped places, in search of the unknown.
Guthrum spread his arms wide.
- Guthrum: Ah, an adventure worthy of Odin. You and he share a love for knowledge and discovery, I have noticed.
- Eivor: Share is not strong enough a word.
- Guthrum: Come, then. We must drink and tell stories before you go. If they are to be our last, they must be our best.
Eivor and Guthrum then shared one last time with each other.
Outcome[edit | edit source]
Eivor met a newly-Christened Guthrum as she said her goodbyes.
