Cow Catcher was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.

Eivor arrived at the cattle farm to help with the missing cows.
Dialogue[edit | edit source]
Eivor arrives at the cattle farm, overhearing Winfrith reprimanding Bertham.
- Winfrith: I said to take care! Did I not say to take care?
Eivor approached the two of them.
- Eivor: Winfrith, Bertham. You look dour for festival-goers.
- Winfrith: I'm not dour, I'm furious! My fool of a son released the cattle we were raising for the feast! Just let them go!
- Eivor: You let them go? Why?
- Bertham: Would you believe it's because I am a lone wolf who says "damn the rules"?
Eivor stared down Bertham with a hint of a smirk on her face.
- Bertham: Would you believe I took them to the river for one last graze but one of the cows looked at me strangely and I got scared?
Winfrith rolled her eyes and Eivor chuckled.
- Eivor: That I believe. Do you want me to get them back for you?
- Winfrith: Take Bertham with you. Perhaps you can protect him from the terrifying cattle. Go on, love. Go with Eivor.
- Bertham: Very well.
They headed for the river.
- Eivor: Where were you when the cow frightened you?
- Bertham: Across the river. That-a-way. I'm not generally afraid of cattle, but the look in this one's eyes! I thought it might hurt me! They're big cows!
- Eivor: Perhaps this is an opportunity to overcome that fear you claim not to possess.
The pair got on a boat and Eivor rowed them across the river.
- Bertham: This is where it happened. They shouldn't be too far.
- Eivor: Good. Let's begin tracking.
As they found a cow, Eivor pulled out her bow.
- Eivor: Look there, Bertham. Another cow, and your first lesson.
- Bertham: All right. Show me.
- Eivor: Now, learn to wield the bow. Arrow rests on the string, pull it back, breathe ... aim ... and release.
- Bertham: You make a challenging thing sound simple.
Eivor then harvested the meat from the dead cow.
- Eivor: I understand this is daunting. Even domesticated creatures possess a worthy strength. And so, even in slaughtering and eating them, we must show the respect. I do not begrudge you your fear.
- Bertham: Thank you. I begrudge myself quite a bit. I feel quite foolish.
Eivor killed another cow.
- Bertham: I hope you aren't too annoyed that you need to look after me today. And clean up my mess.
- Eivor: If anything, this is more relaxing a day than I have enjoyed in recent memory.
- Bertham: O! O! There! I see the last one!
- Eivor: Well done. You are now a tracker. Perhaps that can be your role. You track, Mayda shoots.
Eivor readies her aim, but before she can kill the final cow, Bertham shoots it dead.
- Eivor: Bertham!
- Bertham: O my goodness. Did you see that, Eivor?
- Eivor: It took me a moment to believe it! Fine work, Cow-Fearer. You have overcome your enemy.
- Bertham: Please don't make that my new nickname.
Bertham then took out a knife to get the meat from his kill.
- Bertham: Thank you, Eivor. This part is tougher than I thought! Mayda won't believe I've done this. Nor will my mother.
They headed for the river.
- Eivor: Bertham, were you really scared by a cow? That seems unlikely for a farmer's boy.
- Bertham: Well ... if I tell you what really happened, will you tell anyone?
- Eivor: Never.
- Bertham: It's ... it's to do with Mayda. She's always saying I'm so soft and sweet and kind and lovely.
- Eivor: All good things.
- Bertham: It's terrible. Who wants sweetness? I want to be brave and manly. I thought if I let the animals go, I could hunt them myself and show her I was a good provider, and strong. Then I took out my bow, and the cow did look at me ... and I did get frightened. So that part isn't entirely false
- Eivor: There is nothing wrong with having a good heart. I'm sure Mayda is fond of you because you're a kind young man, not in spite of it.
- Bertham: Thank you, Eivor. I hope you're right... But all the same, I do intend to brag, just a little.
The pair got on the boat and once again, Eivor rowed them across.
- Bertham: I feared asking this of Mayda, but ... do you ever feel sorry for the creatures? That you must hurt them so?
- Eivor: I do not seek yo cause them suffering. I aim for the heart, that it might be a quick death.
- Bertham: Can't imagine being so skilled. Mayda is much the same way. One shot, rabbit dead. Clean.
Returning to the farm, they find Winfrith waiting for them.
- Winfrith: Bertham. Did you manage not to hurt yourself?
- Eivor: Winfrith. I give you your son, Bertham the Beast-Slayer.
- Winfrith: The Beast-Slayer!
- Bertham: You should have seen me out there, Mother. I was a terror with an arrow! But I should go!
- Winfrith: Go? Where?
- Bertham: I want to show Mayda while the blood is still fresh! See you at the feast!
Bertham leaves to find Mayda.
- Winfrith: Well, Eivor. Thank you. Whatever you did out there, I'm pleased for it.

Eivor managed to procure the meat for the Yule feast and Bertham learned about hunting and about himself.
