The Ulfberht Sword was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.
Description[edit | edit source]
Eivor takes a map piece to Vagn for decyphering.
Dialogue[edit | edit source]
Having claimed the Spear of Lugh from the River Erriff, Eivor returned to Ravensthorpe to discuss with Vagn the map fragment she also obtained from the champion.
- Eivor: Vagn. Well met. The Champion put up a good fight but their lance is now rightfully mine.
- Vagn: Well done, drengr! Where were you when I was a young Jomsviking?
- Eivor: When you were a young Jomsviking, Rome still controlled these lands!
- Vagn: You continue to delight me, Eivor!
- Eivor: The champion had a scrap of a map on them but I've never seen this terrain. It looks to flow from the North Sea.
- Vagn: North Sea, hmm?
Eivor handed him the map and note.
Tool of the Gods
- In a monastery near these shores, a Champion wears the god-blessed blade, Ulfberht, that bends without breaking, gives without shattering. He does not answer to every call but will come forth if his Captains fall.
- Vagn: I have it! This is Francia. Here, let me mark the river on your map. The Romans called it Renos but the locals call it the Rhine.
Eivor sailed along the Rhine, killing the champion's Captains before making her way to Ferrières. There, she found the champion deep in prayer. He heard her approach and rose.
- Frankish Champion: You've made a poor decision coming here, pagan dog!
She killed him and claimed his sword for herself.
Eivor escaped from the monastery with her crew and returned to Ravensthorpe to report her success to Vagn.
- Eivor: The Rhine may be long and treacherous but she couldn't hide her riches from me! I took this sword off their Champion.
- Vagn: You continue to impress.
Outcome[edit | edit source]
Eivor defeated the Ulfberht champion and got his sword.
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
The champion is at the highest point of the most fortified monastery in the River Raids game mode, at the far end of a long and unidirectional river, and only spawns after two captains are defeated in two highly fortified military fortresses. Calling the raiders to aid with clearing out the enemies at the fortresses will raise the river's alert level, maxing it out upon hitting the second objective and making the monastery even more difficult to assault. It can take upwards of 45 minutes to complete this memory's objectives on the highest difficulty settings, even with a full crew of Level 5 Jomsvikings. Additionally, the Jomsvikings will not help in this fight, and the champion's dual short sword attacks have poor parry telegraphing and can easily double-tap the player for an instant kill on the highest difficulty settings, resulting in desynchronization and necessitating a full "runback" of the entirety of the objectives.
However, once a captain is killed, the memory's objective is permanently updated upon returning to Ravensthorpe. Thus it may be prudent to attack the two fortresses to kill one or both captains, bank the acquired loot, and raid in other locations to reset the River Rhine's defenses back to low. This significantly reduces the time needed to runback each attempt on the champion—albeit still taking about 5 minutes just to traverse the river—and makes it easier to simply climb the hills and walls of the monastery to reach the church via stealth. Additionally, he will not pursue the player outside the church, making it possible to break line-of-sight by running outside, then becoming anonymous and re-entering the church to assassinate him.
