Ransacking Wenlocan

Ransacking Wenlocan was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan in 2020 through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.

Description

Eivor traveled to Wenlocan Outpost to loot its valuables, in a bid to force Rhodri back to negotiating peace.

Dialogue

Eivor made her way to Wenlocan Outpost.

• Eivor: Wenlocan Outpost. If I take the cargo here, the Britons will be weakened and want peace.

Eivor infiltrated the outpost and eavesdropped on some of the guards.

• Briton Warrior 1: We were fools! "Peace," they said. "There'll be peace!" And what? Of course there's no peace!
• Briton Warrior 2: I've fought in this miserable country for two years gone. Lost half me foot and most of me mind.
• Briton Warrior 1: We kill them, they kill us. They kill us, we kill them. Simple as that.
• Briton Warrior 2: All part o' God's grand plan.

Eivor made her way around the outpost grounds, looting cargo from various scattered chests. In one cave on ground level, Eivor found a letter.

Note of a Giving Soul:
A dead man spoke to me! Poor fellow, he look like he died rough. Said a few coins would help him on his way to the afterlife. He frightened me worse than a lightning storm. I gave him all I had. I must ask a priest if I'm cursed.

While exploring the adjacent ground level cave, flanked by Briton banners, Eivor found several prisoners in a cage.

• Baeldaeg: You! Dane! Get me out of this cursed chicken coop!
• Eivor: Men for Deorlaf's fyrd. More valuable than cargo.

Eivor opened the cage.

• Eivor: I give you freedom. Now you give your shire your pike.
• Baeldaeg: I will.

• Eivor: That's done. Now to track down their supply line. We'll drag Rhodri back to the peace table soon enough.

• Eivor: Quarry and cargo done. Now to meet Ivarr and Ceolbert in Wesberie, before Ivarr stirs up more trouble.

Before leaving, Eivor found a note on a table near the cage.

Orders Concerning Prisoners:
Should you capture any Saxons, keep them alive. We'll make use of them to build earthen works or to work the quarry.

Outcome

Eivor stole cargo from the Britons, weakening their army.

Behind the scenes

Reloading the game once Wenlocan Outpost is loaded for the first time during this memory—via desynchronization or otherwise—may cause a bug in which the two fyrd soldiers imprisoned with Baeldaeg, along with the cage door imprisoning them, may not load at all, leaving Baeldaeg standing idle in an open cell with no interaction to "rescue" him possible. Closing the game fully and reloading a save from prior to Wenlocan's loading seems to be the only way to fix this.
