Pit of Slaughter was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.
Description
Havi entered a tavern and came across a fighting pit where Dugr the Bold was asking for a partner.
Dialogue
While wandering Utgard, Havi heard a Jotun seeking fighters.
- Jotun: Lonely? Miserable? Nothing impresses the ladies like smashing your opponents' face in!
Utgard's fighting pit... the place where legends are made!
You're not a warrior till you've knocked someone's teeth down their throat!
Havi went into what appeared to be a tavern. At the back, a fighting pit had been set up, and another Jotun was calling for a partner.
- Dugr the Bold: Follow me to the pit, and we will destroy our opponents together!
Who will fight beside Dugr the Bold?
Join me, and I promise you victory!
Havi spoke to Dugr.
- Havi: I heard you calling for a fighting partner.
- Dugr the Bold: Two fight with two, that is the rule. But have no fear! You'll have little to do but watch as Dugr the Bold destroys his foes!
(Chose "Sounds easy enough.")
- Havi: I had expected fearsome opposition in the Jotnar fighting pits.
- Dugr the Bold: Fearsome, yes! Too fierce for you. But you can stand behind me. I'll deal with them single-handed.
(Asked "Why has no one else joined you?")
- Havi: You seem to be having trouble finding someone to join you.
- Dugr the Bold: Proud fools! They are afraid I will show them up with my fighting prowess. You're not afraid, are you?
(Asked "What's in it for me?")
- Havi: What is my reward if I help you?
- Dugr the Bold: Besides the glory of victory? Well, I have traveled far in this realm. I would be willing to share the location of some rare treasures.
- Havi: I like your confidence, at least. I'll take this challenge.
- Dugr the Bold: And you won't regret it! For Dugr the Bold is not only a great warrior but a shapeshifter of peerless skill! Pick an animal. Any animal! I will take on that form in the combat to come.
- Havi: I don't like the sound of this. Another time.
- Dugr the Bold: You won't get a fight without me! I'm the only game in town!
Havi left and returned later.
(repeats dialogue)
- Havi: I am no friend to wolves, but it would be good to have one on my side for once.
- Dugr the Bold: Cunning and savage! I like it. Let's go!
- Havi: I have always found the lynx a swift opponent.
- Dugr the Bold: Ah, you favor speed and agility over strength? A good choice. Now for combat!
- Havi: Of all the beasts of this land, the bear is the most fearsome.
- Dugr the Bold: Brute strength and savagery! Very well. Now let's fight!
In the pit, the two pairs prepared for a fight. Dugr transformed into a rabbit, while the opponents became predator beasts.
- Havi: A rabbit? What good is a rabbit?
Havi beat the two opponents with his bare fists and no help from the rabbit-transformed Dugr. Back outside the fighting pit, Havi confronted Dugr while out of breath.
- Havi: What in Hel's name was that? A rabbit? Did you hope to nibble your opponents to death?
- Dugr the Bold: Ah... well, by making myself seem feeble, I made them lower their guard! All in a day's work for Dugr the Bold!
- Havi: Are you even able to transform into a real beast?
- Dugr the Bold: Of course I can! Anything I want! Er... I just don't want to right now.
- Havi: I'd better get some reward for carrying you in that fight, or I'll stick your bobtailed arse in a stew.
- Dugr the Bold: I found a note on a dead traveler. It will lead you to treasures and secrets. At least I hope it will.
Later, Havi read the note containing Dugr's clues.
Dugr's Clues
- Now a lonely tower stands where once it had a brother
Climb inside that spear of stone and you will find the other.
Once a fallen serpent sent a mighty fleet to doom
Seek the path twixt rock and bark and you shall find their tomb.
He followed the clues to a ruined pair of towers, their true state concealed with Jotnar illusion magic.
- Havi: Another tower, where there was none before.
Havi climbed the secret tower and retrieved a key to a chest with one of Ymir's Blood Stones.
Outcome
Havi had to in the fighting pit on his own as Dugr changed into a rabbit.
Behind the scenes
Whatever animal Havi chooses for Dugr to transform into, the opposing pair changes into the other two. This can be useful to remove the wild animal that the player finds the most troublesome to deal with in a fistfight.
