Of All That Has Passed... was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.
Description
Eivor met Sigurd in Ravensthorpe to speak to him about events past.
Dialogue
In the longhouse, the Raven Clan celebrated Sigurd's return home from captivity, though their guest of honor sat alone on his throne, brooding as he stared into a tankard of mead in his remaining left hand. Eivor entered and ecstatically welcomed her brother, making her way to kneel beside the throne's arm. She hadn't noticed, but Randvi had attempted to stop Eivor in her tracks, knowing something that Eivor didn't.
- Eivor: Sigurd Jarl. Back where you belong. O, I missed you, my brother.
Sigurd ignored the welcome and took a drink.
- Sigurd: Yes, you missed me. Once or twice, I hear.
Eivor looked confused.
- Eivor: What?
Sigurd set the tankard down and turned his attention to his sister.
- Sigurd: You took your time to find me. Was it for this, to enjoy your time on my throne?
- Eivor: I did only what you asked of me.
- Sigurd: And you slew all those who questioned you?
- Eivor: That is not what happened. Randvi... Randvi will tell you.
Eivor motioned with her arm at Randvi, who could only stare at the commotion between the once seemingly inseparable siblings, and Sigurd spoke up louder to address her.
- Sigurd: O yeah, will she? My dear wife, brought to me as a gift by her clan to pacify my ambition. Yes, I'm sure she will be the one to tell me the truth!
Disbelieving her ears at Sigurd's change in temperament, Eivor stood up.
- Eivor: What did that witch Fulke do to you?
Sigurd rose from his seat.
- Sigurd: You cannot begin to imagine the things I have seen. What I've learned.
Sigurd began shouting and accusatorily pointing his finger at Eivor.
- Sigurd: Born of gods, is who I am. A Lord of War! A Roman Mars! I know who I am, I know my destiny! And you will not hinder me!
Sigurd blinked at his sudden outburst and the complete silence that had fallen over the meadhall. Turning his head, he saw the rest of the clan staring in bewilderment at what had transpired before of them.
- Eivor: Brother?
Attempting to salvage what he could of the situation, Sigurd announced to the party.
- Sigurd: Forgive me, I am faint. Tired of the day and all that has passed. I need air.
Sigurd left the hall as the party goers resumed their activity in concerned murmurings. Randvi walked up to Eivor.
- Randvi: He's been this way since his return. Could you speak with him? Settle his mind.
Eivor clasped Randvi's arm.
- Eivor: I can try.
Before leaving the longhouse, Eivor heard Holger speaking.
- Holger: Stand with cheer, one and all. Today is a day of celebration! Our jarl is with us! Tonight, let us drink and eat in honor of his return! And now, I will delight you with a poem in praise of the man, a new composition of my own.
Eivor heard Yanli, Gudrun, and Gudmund talking.
- Gudmund: Do you miss your home, Yanli? Are you happy here?
- Gudrun: Don't ask her that! Not while Holger is singing.
- Yanli: Have I not heard this song before? Or do all Norse songs sound alike?
- Gudrun: Please, whatever you learn from us, do not judge our people by the sound of Holger's warbling.
- Yanli: He is doing us a service with his singing.
- Gudmund: Making us deaf?
- Yanli: No, don't you see? As soon as he begins to sound good, that is the moment you know you have had too much to drink!
She passed by Rowan and Tekla talking with Reda.
- Rowan: Reda, you are like no child I have ever met.
- Tekla: I had the same thought. You speak with such wisdom for a young man. An old soul in a new body.
- Reda: Not so new as you might think. I could be your grandfather.
She passed by Petra and Tarben talking with Tekla.
- Petra: I've never been much for ale, nor anything that unsteadies my hands, but this is delicious! You are a wonder, Tekla.
- Tarben: Hints of honey and flowers. Wonderful.
- Tekla: You are too kind, all of you. But I could not have brewed this batch without Tarben's help.
- Tarben: O, no. It was nothing, really.
- Petra: Look at you! Can't accept a word of praise. Slapping it away like a playful cat.
She passed by Octavian complaining to Merton and Rodolf.
- Octavian: Eck, this fish is off. Has a ripeness I can hardly stomach.
- Merton: All right, quit your whining then. Leave it for the rest of us.
- Octavian: Ah, I mean no offense! I am simply more accustomed to a Mediterranean diet. Grapes, olives, shellfish and the like.
- Rodolf: Right. How is that working out for you in England? Getting your fill of olives?
- Merton: Eh. From time to time, yes. My lover Julia sends me some as often as she can.
- Rodolf: Right. Your lover from afar.
After walking among the guests, Eivor turned back to speak to Randvi again.
- Eivor: Randvi. Sigurd has been through so much. Be patient with him.
- Randvi: Of course. I cannot imagine. The savagery of that woman, Fulke.
- Eivor: For all her wretchedness, she seemed to... to like him. I know that sounds strange.
- Randvi: How do you mean?
- Eivor: She claimed to know him, to admire him. Said he was a greater man than we could ever know. Yet for all her praise, she tortured him to the brink of madness and death. I do not understand why.
- Randvi: In time Sigurd may come around. And if he does, he may be willing to speak.
Eivor talked to her again.
- Eivor: Randvi...
- Randvi: Have you spoken with Sigurd yet?
- Eivor: Not yet. Soon.
Eivor spoke to Basim.
- Eivor: Basim. Will you not join us?
- Basim: In time I may celebrate. But tonight has a melancholy mood. I would rather sit here quietly, alone with my thoughts.
- Eivor: I understand.
- Basim: Do not let Sigurd's present mood upset you. He spoke warmly of you as we sailed him. I believe he still trusts you more deeply than he can express.
- Eivor: We trust each other.
- Basim: That is clear. Enjoy the feast, Eivor.
Eivor made her way outside to look for Sigurd.
- Eivor: Where's Sigurd gone?
Eivor found Sigurd sitting on a log near Dag's grave.
- Eivor: In the cemetery. His mood is dark.
Eivor picked up her voice as she got closer.
- Eivor: There you are, Brother.
Eivor approached him.
- Eivor: What are you doing here? I was looking for you.
Sigurd sat silently.
- Eivor: Sigurd...?
Eivor sat down next to him.
- Sigurd: Dag died defending my honor?
- Eivor: So he claimed.
- Sigurd: Then he was a foo. My honor needs no defense. It is stone-solid. Unblemished.
- Eivor: I offered him a way out, but--
Sigurd raised his hand.
- Sigurd: Shhh... Say nothing more of the past. It is gone. There is a rift as deep as death between then... and now.
Eivor nodded.
- Sigurd: I was tested, Eivor. In a crucible of blood and fire. And in my agony, I was reborn. You may think me less than I was, but this is not so. I am greater than before. My mind is a wellspring of prophecies. Visions that tell me who I truly am. And for all that, I am grateful for my suffering.
- Eivor: Sigurd, I want to understand. But all this...all you say makes little sense.
- Sigurd: Basim saw these things in me. Fulke too. Despite her cruelty, she spoke the truth. I am more than the man I was, more than this hobbling stick that stands before you. You must look harder, Eivor. Deeper. See for yourself what they found in me. Do you see it? My greater self?
Eivor looked at Sigurd.
- Eivor: I... I don't know what that means.
- Sigurd: Look! This is the face of a god!
Eivor thought for a second.
- Eivor: I see only my brother and my truest friend, returned to where he is loved and cherished. Where he is meant to be.'
Sigurd smiled. and looked into the sky.
- Sigurd: You are kind, but your eyes are clouded by the past, a place I can no longer see. I fear our paths diverged long ago. Go. I wish to be alone. Return to my feast and drink for me. Celebrate the days to come in my name.
Eivor started to speak but changed her mind. She shook her head, stood up and left.
Eivor awoke the next morning in the longhouse, ready to return to her work and put the ordeal of Suthsexe behind her.
- Eivor: Now, it seems the wind calls me back to Randvi. Best tell her the good news.
Outcome
Eivor and Sigurd spoke and connected again, setting Sigurd's mind at ease.
Behind the scenes
While this memory is active, no facilities or "main" activities at Ravensthorpe are available. Gunnar is also not present in the settlement, having left for the upcoming story arc that heavily involves him. However, River Raids with Vagn and anything involving the Mastery Challenges with Hildiran will still be available, as they have no interactions with Ravensthorpe proper. Additionally, renovations can still be completed, skipping any accompanying "thank you" cutscenes in the process with brief fades to black where the cutscene would play, as their corresponding NPCs are attending the feast—albeit temporarily spawning next to their building before walking back to the longhouse. The cutscenes will play again the next time Eivor walks near the buildings after this memory is completed. In a situation where multiple cutscenes are queued, Tarben's bakery renovation appears to take precedence. Valka does not follow this rule as she does not attend the feast, and the cutscene for her seer's hut renovation will play normally. All other "prelude" dialogues and remarks that queue the player to begin additional content, such as the Tombs of the Fallen and talking to Edyt to unlock the Isle of Skye, that have been exhausted but not explored to their next steps may replay after this memory. Lastly, Mundi is still available to play Orlog if the barracks have been built.
Upon returning to Ravensthorpe, the longship crew including any special raiders recruited during the main story—such as Birna and Finnr—may walk up to the longhouse, but they will not be present upon a reload or after the cutscene in which Sigurd yells at Eivor; instead, they will be back at the longship.
For some reason, Holger may decide to walk home during the feast while he talks, instead of sitting down on his stool. This will require the player to reload the game until he sits down properly, or to chase him outside and stay in range to exhaust his dialogue, before the succedent dialogues can play.
