Not Today, Jotun!

Not Today, Jotun! was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Basim Ibn Ishaq in 2020 through the Portable Animus HR-8.5, in which a vision of one of Odin's memories could be seen.

Description

Havi saw a dwarf working on shelter path clues.

Dialogue

Havi overheard a dwarf complaining about his work.

• Banski: "Travel to Svartalfheim," she says. "Paint all the signs to the shelters," she says. Risking my neck every bloody day, more like it... Might've painted a few too many of these, come to think of it...

Havi noticed all similar shelter runes from his journey before. Havi neared closer to the worker, who mistaken the Æsir lord as a Jotun.

• Banski: Agh! Tried to sneak up on me, ya frosty bastard! Not today, Jotun!

Banski dropped down a hole in the ground as Havi followed him.

• Banski: Haha, Jotun! You can't fool me with your current shapeshifting! Even in your current ugly form!
• Havi: Stand your ground! You address no Jotun, you sniveling sack of—

Banski left the area, filled with dead Jotun warriors, as Havi searched for him.

• Havi: Where did he go...? And how do I get out of here?

Havi looked around and found a low entry. Havi slid and saw a bigger pathway filled with rats.

• Banksi: "Vermin," you Jotnar called us! And so, vermin shall feast upon you! Good riddance, scum!

Using his Hugr-Rip, Havi activated the Power of Jotunheim to teleport from spot to spot. With this power, Havi was able to solve his problem of being trapped by pushing a movable block forward.

• Havi: I have bested your traps, coward! Now show yourself, or you will make an enemy of Havi, Lord of Asgard!
• Banski: Lord of Asgard? Yeah right! And I'm Hreidmar, king of dwarves, freshly resurrected! Try harder, Jotun!

Havi found and used a lift, only to combat snakes. Havi found himself stuck, but was able to push movable structures to escape.

• Banski: Hey Jotun! You should lighten up!

Banski dropped a oil canteen on Havi.

• Havi: You sneaky little...

Havi climbed out of the hole and spoke with Banski.

• Havi: We meet at last.
• Banski: What in the... How did... No Jotun has ever outsmarted my trap! Oh. Oh crap. You're really not a Jotun, are you? Which means you're—
• Havi: The Lord of Asgard, yes. And in no mood for such trickery. Even though I must admit... I admire your cunning. You managed to fool me, if only for a brief moment. Many have tried. Few have succeeded. Even fewer lived to tell the tale. Who are you, dwarf?
• Banski: Banski, they call me. Before the invasion, I was an artist. Some clever clogs reckoned I should paint all the signs to all the dwarf shelters. And that's how I found this empty shelter here. Thought I would use it to get a little payback, y'know, teach some Jotuns a lesson. Admittedly, it's not the most efficient means of revenge. But every journey begins with a single step, eh! Still, never thought I'd catch an Aesir in my trap. Uh, unintentionally, I should point out!
• Havi: All you caught was my attention. And perhaps a tiny sliver of my respect.
• Banski: Then, if you'll indulge me, what went wrong? What was the failure in the trap?

You're an amateur tricksterYour prey was too wise for you todayThat you expect Jotnar to fall for thisNot enough rats. And they should be biggerI have nothing more to say

• Havi: You're far from the first trickster I've tangled with. And you have much to learn, to be worthy of the title.
• Banski: Everyone's a critic.

• Havi: There was no failing, other than your prey was the wisest and most cunning of all beings in the Nine Realms.
• Banski: And modest too!
• Havi: Another of my attributes.

• Havi: You underestimate your enemy. You're telling me Jotnar actually fall for this child-like ruse of yours?
• Banski: Literally, yes! You saw the bodies. Can't help themselves. They see a dwarf dive down, and, boop, in they go. Same as you, if you recall.
• Havi: Yes, my curiosity got the better of me this day.

• Havi: The rats... I'll be happy to never see them again. But you had too few. A pack of wolves would be better. They'd make short work of your prey.
• Banski: Ah, yes, a pack of wolves. Very easy for a dwarf to catch and handle. Why didn't I think of that, eh?
• Havi: Get one to chase you down here. Every journey begins with a single step.

• Havi: I have nothing more to say. But... you should look your prey in the eye. Let them know who has bested them.
• Banski: Ah, yes, get within reach of someone, a far bigger someone, with an increasing desire to kill me. What a terrific idea. In any case... I am no warrior. And this shelter here is all I have with which to fight back. All I have are my wits, my anger, and my shelter.
• Havi: Then what more do you need? Good hunting, Banski.
• Banski: And to you.

Havi survived Banski's trap and left him to his work.

Outcome

Havi survived a dwarf's Jotun death trap.

Behind the scenes

The dwarf's name and his claim that he used to be an artist earlier in life are both references to the anonymous British political street artist Banksy, who is well known for his graffiti art.
