A Dead Man's Tale was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.
Description
Eivor found a corpse of a man in a pit.
Dialogue
In Nyhofn, Eivor heard a woman shouting about a missing man.
- Norse Woman: Has anyone seen a hunter? He is tall, his hair is like mine... and he uses a bow! He was last seen hunting near the woods to the west. He should be back by now.
Some ways west of the settlement, Eivor found a short blade buried in the edge of a cliff. At the bottom of the cliff lay the body of a man. She went down to look closer.
- Eivor: A lonely end. Luck skipped his turn.
Eivor read a nearby note.
- Bloody Diary:
So ends the adventure of Eirik the Bold.
Fled my post, now lost in these endless woods.
Tumbled off a cliff. Broke me leg.
Night comes and the wolves howl. Won't be long.
Whoever finds this, I beg thee, bear my corpse back to Nyhofn in the east, just along the coast.
I only want--
- Eivor: Take you back to Nyhofn? A tall ask for a corpse.
She picked up the dead man and headed for Nyhofn.
- Eivor: You have some weight on you.
Almost there.
Entering the settlement, the woman Eivor had heard shouting earlier spotted her.
- Norse Woman: Brother? Brother!
As Eivor placed the body on the ground, the woman ran toward her, crying.
- Norse Woman: Brother...! You should have listened to me... You have always been too selfish, reckless! Even Mother said so!
- Eivor: Blame not the adventurer, for the pull of blood-song can tempt even the gods.
- Norse Woman: Wh-where do I go now, without you to guide me? Wh-what should I do? L-lost... I am l-lost...
- Eivor: Just like breathing, death is a constant. The sooner you learn and accept, the sooner you become stronger.
- Norse Woman: Wh-what are you saying...? You want me to forget my brother?
- Eivor: Not forget, child-
- Norse Woman: No! I don't care about your stories! Thank you for bringing my brother back, but please, go away!
The woman waved Eivor away and Eivor took her leave.
- Norse Woman: Brother... O... what would Mother say... Brother... I miss you. Why did you leave us...!
- Eivor: Remember your brother and all that he is. Bring home his tales and let his legacy be grown. That is all we are ... words and song.
- Norse Woman: I will hone my bow-craft, and he will smile upon me from above. He will be proud.
Eivor nodded.
- Norse Woman: Th-thank you, for bringing him back. Thank you.
I'm going to be the best hunter ever, just like you, Brother. Wait and see, I will shoot that elk in the eye.
The woman picked up her brother's corpse and carried it to a small camp set up nearby where a man was singing. He stopped as she neared.
- Norse Man: Frey! Wh-wha? N-no... is that?
- Norse Woman: He is in the halls now.
- Norse Man: I... I am sorry, Frey. He died by prey, but he will rest a hunter.
The woman picked up a shovel and began to dig her brother's grave.
Outcome
Eivor brought the corpse back to Nyhofn to his sister.
