Lost Glory

Lost Glory was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.

Description

Eivor traveled to the Royal Hall in Jorvik to meet with King Halfdan.

Dialogue

Eivor returned to Jorvik to meet with Halfdan.

• Eivor: I wonder how Halfdan fares, now that he sits on the throne.

Eivor went to his throne, only to find Moira besides it.

• Eivor: Hmm. Moira may know where Halfdan has gone.

Eivor spoke to Moira

• Eivor: Moira, is something wrong?
• Moira: Weep for Northumbria.
• Eivor: Is it Halfdan? Has he gotten worse?
• Moira: His heart is broken. He is a mere shadow of himself. With Faravid lost and his brothers away, he wallows in paranoia and sadness.
• Eivor: I could speak with him. Where is he now?
• Moira: Wandering the fields of Picheringa with his beloved Beonton.
• Eivor: I'll find him. Thank you, Moira.

Eivor took her leave.

• Moira: Picheringa is in the east. Just follow the road to Scarborough.

Eivor left Jorvik and followed the road northeast, arriving at Picheringa. Near the east gate, she spotted Halfdan, depressed and sitting on a bench.

• Halfdan: No glory, no hope. Nothing but snow, silent as a corpse in its grave.

Eivor spoke with Halfdan.

• Eivor: Stand up, Halfdan. I'm taking you back to Jorvik.
• Halfdan: (laugh)
• Eivor: Up, my lord. You're a king, you're not allowed to sulk. Men bled and died to sit you on that throne. So go, sit.
• Halfdan: My brother, Ivarr... did he die well?
• Eivor: He died fighting.
• Halfdan: You slew my brother and never said a word. You kept this from me!
• Eivor: It was no secret. Ubba knew, did he not—
• Halfdan: Leave me!
• Eivor: I will not. I've come to see you safely home. Now get up.

• Halfdan: I... I mislaid my hammer. I think Beonton ran off with it, but I'm not... I'm not... I'm not well, Eivor.
• Eivor: I'll find your hammer. And then you'll come with me.
• Halfdan: I was on my way to Scarborough. If you find my hammer, bring it to me there.

Eivor left to find Beonton and Halfdan's hammer. Eivor caught sight of Beonton in Dalby Forest.

• Eivor: There's Beonton, guarding the hammer.

Eivor saw Beonton surrounded by three wolves and helped Beonton kill them. Eivor picked up Halfdan's hammer.

• Eivor: Halfdrunk needs his hammer.

Eivor rode to the lighthouse atop Scarborough, where Halfdan sat at the edge of a cliff past the entrance.

• Eivor: The lighthouse. Halfdan awaits.

Eivor walked up to speak with Halfdan, who stood up to look off in the distance.

• Eivor: This hammer is not meant to be thrown, Halfdan. Remember that next time.

Eivor handed Halfdan's hammer back to him as Halfdan smiled and chuckled.

• Halfdan: My father, Ragnar, he gifted this to me. Took it off a Finnish chief. Still warm with blood when he handed it to me. I had fourteen winters.
• Eivor: Ragnar Lothbrok was a great king.
• Halfdan: A Finnish arrow killed my mother. A shield-maiden she was, as fierce as a wolf swallowing the sun. My father swore to kill the men who took her from us. And he did, fourteen against one. But that was years ago, in the east. And this is the west, where my father lies dead, a pile of bones in a pit of snakes.
• Eivor: And here we are, still telling stories of his life and deeds.
• Halfdan: How did my brother die?

• Eivor: With his hand on his axe, awaiting the maidens of the battle-slain.
• Halfdan: Hm. Now he drinks at our father's side, awaiting the war at the end of days.

• Eivor: Ivarr murdered an innocent man, a good man. He earned the death I gave him.
• Halfdan: Hm. If the codes of honor demanded his death, you did what had to be done.

Beonton ran up and barked happily at his owner.

• Halfdan: Beonton, my boy! Come here boy!

Eivor smiled at the dog's arrival.

• Eivor: A dog always forgives. But he needs you home. All of Northumbria does.
• Halfdan: Hmph. Do a last thing for me. Light the beacon for all to see. And let it burn.

Eivor climbed the lighthouse and lit the brazier atop it. After lighting the brazier, Eivor descended and heard Halfdan thanking her.

• Halfdan: Thank you, friend. You're always welcome at my hall.

Outcome

Eivor saved Beonton and recovered Halfdan's hammer, Orthstirr. Afterwards, she lit the beacon at Scarborough, and Halfdan went back to rule Northumbria.

Behind the scenes

The dialogue in this memory is not affected in any way by Eivor's choices in the Eurvicscire arc, including and up to determining Faravid's fate in Of Blood and Bonds, or Ivarr's fate in King Killer. Halfdan considers Eivor a friend that is "welcome" in his hall even if she parted with him on poor terms for standing up for Faravid. Additionally, Eivor's dialogue indicating that Ivarr died "with his hand on his axe" does not change if Eivor denied him his axe as he lay dying. This can be interpreted as a lie on Eivor's part (with it being truthful in the alternative) or an oversight by the developers.
