Scarborough

Scarborough is a town on the North Sea coast of Yorkshire, England, built over and occupying the site of a former Roman fort and later a Viking settlement established during the 12th century.

History

In 876, the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir returned the lost dog Beonton and war hammer Orthstirr to Halfdan Ragnarsson, Northumbria's new king who waited at the bottom of Scarborough in a depressed state. With his weapon back, Halfdan recounted how his father Ragnar Lothbrok gave it to him at the age of fourteen, how his mother Lagertha was killed in battle, and how Ragnar avenged her. However, his tone soured when he told of how Ragnar was executed in a pit of snakes, and asked Eivor about his half-brother Ivarr's death. Eivor gave her answer before swiftly changing the topic to impress upon Halfdan that his subjects needed him to rule competently. Halfdan agreed to go back to Jorvik to rule, but first asked Eivor to light the beacon atop Scarborough's tower for everyone to see. After she lit the beacon, Halfdan promised that she was welcome in his hall anytime.

Throughout her travels, Eivor found a dead fisherman, who was crushed by a boulder, at the bottom of Scarborough. Among his personal effects, Eivor found a love letter to his wife in Picheringa and an anniversary ring. Thus, Eivor left the area and headed to meet the widow. Later, Eivor climbed the tower and used it to better orient herself, taking note of other landmarks.
