The Nun's Minster

The Nun's Minster was an Anglo-Saxon church in Wincestre, Hamtunscire, within the Kingdom of Wessex.

History[edit | edit source]

In 877, the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir reconvened with the reeve Goodwin and King Alfred at the Nun's Minster, after killing the Order of the Ancients member Selwyn. Despite some initial hostility, Eivor and Alfred discussed their next target, "The Quill", who was known to use the children of Wincestre as her spies and thieves. After Eivor promised to track down and eliminate The Quill, Alfred and Goodwin left the minster.[1]

Behind her, Eivor saw that a young girl had observed the conversation and asked her to come forward. The girl soon asked Eivor for her "mother's" medallion, which Selwyn had apparently stolen. Knowing better, Eivor did not give up the medallion and decided to follow the girl, believing she could lead her to The Quill.[1]

In 878, King Alfred and Brother Ealric followed a young girl, Aemma, to the Nun's Minster, as her mother had fallen ill. Within the church, Alfred and Ealric assessed the mother's condition as Alfred went to talk with the ill woman. After the mother, Judith, stated that she felt too ill to continue, Alfred promised to take care of her daughter and prayed for God to watch over Judith in her final moments. Right after his prayer, Aemma was left with her mother as Alfred and Ealric continued on their day.[2]

During her time in Wincestre, Eivor found a young child, Esobert, atop the minster's scaffolding. After talking with him, Eivor agreed to help Esobert acquire a tree's flower. The Viking soon retrieved the flower and gave it to Esobert. The boy then went up to his crush and offered her the flower while also playfully asking for her hand in marriage. The girl in question was Princess Æthelflæd, King Alfred's daughter, and accepted the gift while her mother, Ealhswith, decided to humor Esobert's confession, though she declared they would need to wait until they were both adults and had Alfred's blessing to get married.[3]
