Rock of Fertility was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan in 2020 through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.
Description[edit | edit source]
Eivor heard a woman and her husband arguing about getting children.
Dialogue[edit | edit source]
Eivor came upon a scene of marital strife.
- Pious Wife: How am I supposed to be happy with only your stupid face to look at for the rest of my life?
- Anglo-Saxon Man: You said you loved my face!
- Pious Wife: I do. Which is why I wanted a smaller, sweeter version of it. Ostara will bless me with a child.
- Anglo-Saxon Man: That pagan rock holds no magic. Besides... there are wolves. Big ones. With teeth.
- Pious Wife: I am going to that stone, and you cannot stop me.
Eivor approached.
- Eivor: Why do you quarrel?
- Pious Wife: Because my husband has the courage of a quivering dormouse. All I ask for is a child.
- Eivor: I am not sure how I can help with that.
- Pious Wife: There is a rock, a place of great power. They say that all woman who spend the night there come away pregnant.
- Eivor: From a rock?
- Pious Wife: From the fertile power and energy it holds. I must see it for myself. Will you protect me on the road?
The woman and Eivor started on their walk to the rock.
- Pious Wife: Every woman I know who has gone to the rock has left with child. It's a miracle.
- Eivor: And this is not a Christian belief?
- Pious Wife: The legend says that Ostara, the goddess of spring, transformed a bird into a hare at this very spot. The hare then laid colored eggs for her festival! The place has great magic.
- Eivor: Birds becoming hares? Hares laying eggs? We Norse have stranger stories.
The rock came into view.
- Pious Wife: Here we are.
Wolves howled nearby.
- Pious Wife: Wolves!
- Eivor: Stay out of harm's way, I will deal with them.
Eivor dispatched the wolves.
- Pious Wife: Perhaps that silly bugger was right, the wolves are fearsome. Thank you, you saved my skin.
They continued to the rock.
- Pious Wife: This is the sacred place.
Eivor followed the woman under the great rock formation, where a smaller rock was surrounded with food offerings. The woman kneeled.
- Pious Wife: Great Ostara, bestow your blessing upon me. Give me that which I so desperately desire. A child.
A man approached.
- The Rock: Ostara shall grant you wish, through the power of a sacred ritual. Do you both seek the goddess's... succor?
- Eivor: This woman has come to take in the power of the rock of fertility.
- The Rock: And she will. All leave satisfied.
The woman appraised "The Rock" and responded coyly.
- Pious Wife: However long it takes and whatever is needed of me. I will give it.
Eivor watched the pair disappear into the bushes. They began making loud noises.
- The Rock: Yes, my dear! Feel the power of the goddess! Take it all in.
- Pious Wife: But it is so... big...
As the pair continued the "ritual", Eivor inspected the pile of offerings. She looted several lesser valuables and found a note.
A Believer's Honorific
- Great Ostara,
Last month you gave me the greatest gift imaginable. A beautiful baby girl, whom I called Oestryth in your honor. I could not have imagined that nine months after I engaged all night in the sacred ritual would this wonderful gift be mine.
My husband loves her dearly, watches her closely every day. Says how miraculous it is that her hair is the color of the dying sun as we are both dark as the night.
Perhaps I will come to you again, and you will grant me a son?
May the wisdom of the Ancient Fathers and Mothers continue to live in you.
She also inspected a basket of apples and a locket left on a wooden stool. As she investigated, she got a fuller picture of how the rock of fertility truly worked.
- Eivor: Many women come here.
How many children has this rock brought forth?
A lot of women have had their greatest desire granted.
Are there [are] cuckoos in the nest?
The woman's noises became louder until they suddenly ceased with a heavy exhale.
- Eivor: The essence of the gods is certainly spreading itself all over Suthsexe.
Having heard enough, Eivor opted to leave.
- Eivor: I should leave them to their, er... ritual.
Outcome[edit | edit source]
Eivor escorted the woman to the hilltop and found that the Rock of Fertility was actually a man, after which the "pious" wife made love with him.
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
Eivor can make four possible remarks while investigating the pile of offerings at the rock, but there are only three trigger points. As such, they will be randomly pulled with no way to see all four outside of reloading a save. Order of object investigation does not influence this, and "Many women come here" appears to be one of Eivor's most common comments, with "Are there cuckoos in the nest?" being the least common.
