Blazing a Trail was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Basim ibn Ishaq in 2020 through the Portable Animus HR-8.5, in which a vision of one of Odin's memories could be seen.
Description[edit | edit source]
Havi followed the trail of Eysa's attack on the Muspel lord, Calder.
Dialogue[edit | edit source]
Havi tracked the path that was left behind Eysa's chase after Calder. Havi came upon a spot of small fight and its aftermath.
- Havi: These fools dared stand in her path...
Havi found a decapitated body near a pool of lava.
- Havi: Several wounds. This one put up a fight. Briefly, I suspect.
Havi investigated the area and found a dead Muspel warrior perched against the ground.
- Havi: How hard was he knocked into his rock? Most likely dead upon impact.
Havi found another body in the lava, while using the Hugr-Rip to activate the Power of Muspelheim.
- Havi: No other bodies on the war path. He was the last to die.
Havi collected all the clues and concluded on the events that took place.
- Havi: Eysa caught up to Calder. His warriors moved in while he pushed on... but Eysa tore through them like a whirlwind. The trail of the dead reveals her direction. Calder's too. And most importantly, the Salakar's... They're headed west.
Havi headed west and found a scorched battlefield in his path.
- Havi: Looks like these two brought all the fires of Muspelheim with them. And [[Freyja]|Freya]] wonders why I have always refused to take her on a tour of that scorched dunghill.
Havi investigated the area and found blood on the ground.
- Havi: Eysa and Calder fought here. Blood was spilt.
Havi found sets of footprints nearby as well.
- Havi: Two sets of footprints. One is stretched, like someone fled. The other, closer together, uneven, and lined with blood. They were hobbling, perhaps.
Havi figured out what transpired from their fight.
- Havi: Eysa and Calder fought here. He gained the advantage... Foolish girl. Eysa, your rage makes you vulnerable. She's hurt, but not enough to stop her. Looks like she followed Calder up that hill.
Havi ventured further and found an abandoned Muspel camp surrounded by Jötnar warriors.
- Havi: No sight of Eysa or Calder. Only these curious Jotun buffoons who stand in my way. They should run. But they won't.
Havi sneaked around the camp to eavesdrop on the Jötnar.
- Jotun Warrior 1: Keep alert until we know what happened here.
- Jotun Warrior 2: Something must have caused the Muspels to leave so abruptly.
- Jotun Warrior 3: This looks to be the source of all that noise, Mogr.
Havi soon investigated the camp and found marks on the ground.
- Havi: There was a cart here. And drag marks leading to it.
Havi found a pile of ropes on the ground.
- Havi: These, or similar, were used to restrain someone.
Havi found more Muspel corpses.
- Havi: The dead stack up. For these Muspels, Ragnarök came early.
Havi soon found Eysa's spear on the ground.
- Havi: Eysa's spear. Abandoned... Did Calder and his minions finally best her?
Havi figured out what happened at the camp.
- Havi: Eysa chased Calder into this camp. Leaking her lifeblood, blinded by rage, and utterly reckless. Looks to have cost her too. She came crashing in, mauling whatever halfwit stood between her and Calder. But those halfwits fought back in numbers. Injured and disarmed, she was overpowered and restrained. Calder then had her tossed onto a cart like a sack of turnips... Looks like they fled up that path. What is it Calder plans to do with the little princess now that she is his prisoner? Surely not...
Havi completed his investigation of the camp, dealing with the Jötnar as he saw fit, and continued on his path.
- Havi: These tracks lead west. I must find Calder. And the Salakar. For Baldr's sake.
Havi found more blood in his path.
- Havi: Is this blood Eysa's? Or is she still proving too much to handle?
Havi continued and found another Muspel corpse.
- Havi: They paused here for a moment before continuing... most likely to re-secure Eysa's bonds. Even in her sorry state, I imagine her to be quite the handful... She even bested me. Temporarily.
Havi travelled nearby Midalstífla.
- Havi: Perhaps Baldr would not approve of my methods. Of the cruelty I must perform on his behalf. He and Eysa, they are young. Pure of heart, but lacking in logic... One day, they will grow up and see life as I see it. In the meantime, they must rely on me to ensure they live long enough to achieve that wisdom. And so, I do not have the luxury of being... faultless.
Havi found the cart abandoned besides another Muspel corpse.
- Havi: I hope I'm not too late. They made a turn, towards the river.
Havi looked further and found an injured Eysa.
- Havi: Prey lies ahead. But where is the hunter?
Havi went to Eysa.
- Havi: Eysa.
- Calder: Is that you again, Mad One?
Havi rose and turned around to face Calder.
- Calder: Come to tempt fate, I see.
- Havi: I do not die this day. Can you say the same?
Calder laughed.
- Calder: Ah, yes. You've proven once already how you like to strut around, unencumbered by fear.
Calder took out the Salakar.
- Calder: Perhaps the Salakar did not give you an adequate taste of it?
- Havi: Enough of this blithering. Hand over what is now mine, or shall I just take it?
Calder put the Salakar away and drew his battle axe.
- Calder: To know fear, we must be subjected to it. When I am through with you, I will take Eysa's willful hugr. Soon after, the Salakar will be complete. Then, believe me, you will know fear... and pain. Just like your son.
Havi and Calder fought each other. As Havi struck and parried, Calder taunted him.
- Calder: Weak. Old. Frail. What happened, All-Father? Too much of that pretentious Asgardian air?
I enjoyed poking my blades into Baldr's flesh. Seeing what was underneath. What purity. Full and true. The apple fell far in his case.
Is that your best? Come now, Havi. Even your boy put up more of a fight.
Such a desperate, feeble man. I wish all the Aesir could see you now.
Surtr will be surprised when I present him with his own daughter's corpse, but I will make sure he knows the truth.
Between his axe swings, Calder occasionally ran to the center of their arena and summon lava, filling a great deal of the circle and restricting Havi's movements.
Havi eventually defeated Calder in battle, wounding him severely. Calder began to crawl towards the Salakar as Havi stood over him.
- Havi: Why is Surtr collecting hugrs? What does he mean to do with the Salakar?
Calder ignored him and continued crawling.
- Havi: Tell me.
Havi kicked Calder onto his back, away from the orb.
- Calder: Why? Do you aim to finish my work?
- Havi: Ask yourself how much you care to suffer in these final moments.
- Calder: Do your worst.
- Eysa: You are wasting your breath. He will not tell you.
Eysa had recovered and knelt down to pick up the Salakar.
- Eysa: And he won't have to. His secrets are known to me. You want them? Move aside.
Havi stood in her way, not quite ready to kill Calder.
- Eysa: Move aside or I will destroy it.
Havi relented and moved aside, as Calder tried to stand.
- Calder: Traitor!
- Eysa: Traitor? It is you who are slaughtering your own kind.
- Calder: What I do, I do for Surtr!
- Havi: Such devotion requires a strong hugr. All these Muspel sacrifices... you needed only look inward.
Eysa thrust the Salakar into Calder's chest and ripped his hugr from him, sealing it within the Salakar as his body fell over lifeless.
- Eysa: Was he right? About you wanting to complete the Salakar?
- Havi: Surtr will not trade my son for something he cannot use.
- Eysa: So you will see it through. To what end? How many lives would you take?
- Havi: For Baldr, I would drain all nine realms. Even Asgard.
- Eysa: The words of a dreadful king... and a selfless father. It is the one thing that separate you from my own. You wish to reunite with your son. I wish to see my father's plans lie in ruin. No matter the price. Can you see both through?
Havi looked over at Calder's corpse.
- Havi: I can, but I will need your help. The Salakar still requires the hugr of a suitable Jotun. Calder never found one... I must get hunting.
- Eysa: Do as you will. In the meantime, I'll join my stepmother, wherever she may be.
Eysa walked forward and handed the Salakar to Havi, sealing their alliance.
- Eysa: I will try to learn how the Salakar fits into my father's plans. Under the guise of a contrite stepdaughter, of course.
Havi offered Eysa's necklace back to her.
- Eysa: Keep it. I will need a way to find you when it is time to confront my father.
- Havi: You and this bauble share a bond?
Havi returned the necklace to his pocket and smirked.
- Havi: I set out to use you to my advantage. It ends with me in your debt.
- Eysa: If it were not for you, I would have never known what my father was capable of. He used our people. Turned them on each other. For his gain. I cannot forgive him. And to that end, I am your ally.
- Havi: In Asgard, an ally is a friend.
- Eysa: Let us not get carried away.
Eysa took her leave as Havi set out to find a strong Jotun candidate for the Salakar.
Outcome[edit | edit source]
Havi found and saved Eysa from Calder's grasp. After Havi defeated Calder in combat, Eysa used the Salakar on Calder and soon allied with Havi against her father, Surtr.
