Ursine Takeover

Ursine Takeover was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan in 2020 through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.

Description

Eivor came across a warn-torn camp full of bears, and a man pleading for help.

Dialogue

At Vithrloekr, Eivor finds a camp beset by bears.

• Eivor: A camp... overrun with bears.

She heard a man whispering.

• Norse Man: Psst! Here, I'm over here!
  Odin's beard! I-I can't move, it hurts. Hurry, before they catch on to my ruse!
  I'm here, here! O... I'm going to be bear-feast...

On a hill at the edge of the camp, Eivor found a wounded man playing dead. Stealthily, she made her way to him.

• Norse Man: Praise Odin that you found me! But be still, we are in the lands of the ferocious tree shakers... My wounds hurt deep. If you could carry me to safety, kinsman, I would be indebted!

Carried man out.Killed bears.Man killed.

Eivor picked the man up and carried him from the camp.

(If Eivor set the man down before reaching safety)

• Norse Man: H-hey! Where are you going? You can't leave me here! P-please!

Reaching a safe place, Eivor set the man down.

• Norse Man: Slowly, slowly now...
• Eivor: You are safe now.
• Norse Man: Thank you, thank you, kinsman. I was so helpless against them. I even tried to use a key I found as a weapon. The brute swallowed it! Now I will never know what that key unlocks.
• Eivor: And how did you come to be stuck here?
• Norse Man: My friends, the Toothbreakers, were with me, but we were separated when I went searching for what my key might open. I ended up snooping around that abandoned camp, and that's when they showed up. Bears! So many bears. I must catch my breath...

Eivor opted to kill the bears instead, then went to meet with the man again, who hopped to his feet.

• Eivor: You are safe now.

• Norse Man: Thank you, thank you, kinsman. I was so helpless against them. I even tried to use a key I found as a weapon. The brute swallowed it! Now I will never know what that key unlocks.
• Eivor: And how did you come to be stuck here?
• Norse Man: My friends, the Toothbreakers, were with me, but we were separated when I went searching for what my key might open. I ended up snooping around that abandoned camp, and that's when they showed up. Bears! So many bears. I must catch my breath...

Eivor went to the man but was spotted by the bears. During the attack, the man was killed.

• Eivor: He has nothing more to fear.

After killing the bears, Eivor searched their carcasses and retrieved a key, which she used to unlock a chest in one of the tents. Searching the camp, she also found a note.

Lord Gorm, your idea of training "war-bears" has met a few setbacks, but we will keep at it.

Outcome

Eivor killed the bears at the overrun camp.

Behind the scenes

If players fast travel back to Tiotenontatierénhton for the purposes of returning to Nyhofn as quickly as possible after this memory, the hunter beset by bears may not be back at camp. Wandering the wilderness anywhere not near Nyhofn or Vithrloekr appears to be the key to getting his actor to actually relocate back to the group's camp.
