Fare Thee Well, King Fair-Hair was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Basim Ibn Ishaq in 2020 through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.[1]
Description[edit | edit source]
Eivor returned to Norway.
Dialogue[edit | edit source]
Eivor made her way to Alrekstad's longhouse with her brother Sigurd Styrbjornsson to meet with King Harald, who was surrounded by his advisors, including his uncle Guthorm the Wise.
- Sigurd: Young Harald has made quite a name for himself in our time away.
- Eivor: Twelve or thirteen years, I think.
Harald looked up from his map to welcome his guests.
- King Harald: Sigurd! Eivor! You are welcome here! Come.
Harald walked over to lay his hands on Sigurd's shoulders in friendship.
- King Harald: I got word that you would visit, but I... did not expect you so soon.
The three walked back to the map table.
- Eivor: Stout men huddled around a map, with eyes as hungry as their bellies. Little has changed here.
- King Harald: Yes. I have spent half my life worrying over hastily drawn maps. But this is not a land we mean to conquer. It is a land in need of aid.
He pointed to a spot depicting an isolated island in a far corner of the map.
- Eivor: Iceland?
- King Harald: Yes. Our friend Ingolfr sends word that his new settlement is in peril. Cold winters and simmering blood feud. I have agreed to send supplies and men, enough to bring peace and ride out the winter. Eivor, it may be your coming here, at this time, to this place, is a blessing from Thor himself. Would you and your brother lead this expedition for me? I cannot think of a better pairing to see this through.
- Sigurd: Eivor, this is fated. I long for such an adventure. Tell me your mind. Does your heart-fire burn for another expedition?
- Eivor: I am grateful for the offer. But I have not come here to walk down well-worn roads. I am here to say farewell. For once and all.
Sigurd stepped back, shocked at his sister's statement. He looked to Harald to judge his response at being rebuffed, and the king put his hand to his chin in thought then lowered it.
- King Harald: For once and all? Are you leaving England as well?
- Eivor: I am. Sailing west. Accompanied only by myself. To a land on no map.
- King Harald: For what need?
- Eivor: I'll discover that only when I arrive. But that is tomorrow. Today I would like to spend time in the company of those I love. And tell stories from long ago.
Sigurd laughed.
- Sigurd: Beginning when?
Eivor pointed to the scar she bore on the right side of her neck since childhood.
- Eivor: Long, long ago. You understand?
Sigurd touched the telltale mark of veins on the side of his neck as well, and the two stared with knowing looks at Harald, who self-consciously scratched at his own mark hidden beneath his hair. Suddenly aware that the company around him would think their next discussion to be madness, Harald awkwardly dismissed them with a laugh.
Guthorm motioned for his men to follow him.
- Eivor: Now. Where to begin?
The three Vikings talked about their lives as the advisors left.
Outcome[edit | edit source]
Eivor said goodbyes to King Harald and Sigurd, but not before discussing their shared commonality of being related to the Isu.
