A New Home was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.

Description[edit | edit source]

Eivor was tasked to upgrade her new growing settlement.

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

Settlement Renown 1
After building the Blacksmith's forge, Eivor consulted the Settlement Status letter from Randvi in her room.

Ravensthorpe's Status: Encampment

Behold, our new encampment, borne from a soot-heap left behind by the Sons of Ragnar. It may look a bit shabby now, but with some effort, we will soon be a beacon of trade and culture.

We currently have the capacity for the following services...

– Blacksmith
Hidden Ones Bureau
Stable and Aviary
– Trading Post
– Barracks

Once the Blacksmith's forge is up and running, I would recommend building the Hidden Ones Bureau, as Hytham can help us win alliances in the cities of England.

Speak to me if you have any more questions,

Randvi

Eivor left to investigate what she could build in the encampment. As she assessed the open plots of land, she determined how to obtain the necessary supplies and raw materials.

  • Eivor: Raiding is the surest way to find treasures and supplies for building up our settlement.

She approached Hytham at his tent and inquired as to his plans.

Hidden Ones' Bureau built

In time, Eivor built the bureau, allowing Hytham to move forward with his plans.

Rowan called out to Eivor as she neared the Stables.

  • Rowan: Eivor, my stable is a bit spare just now, but if you can build me something better, I promise you the finest of beasts.
  • Eivor: A bustling stable would be a great boon here. I will see what I can do.
She approached and spoke to him further.
  • Eivor: Tell me about what you do here.
  • Rowan: As a stablehand and gameskeeper, I am happy to help you with any matter concerning your horses or your raven.
But for the moment, I'm a little stuck. If you could build me a stable, I can set up shop.
(If "Tell me about yourself." is chosen)
  • Eivor: How did you come to have such an affinity for horses, Rowan?
  • Rowan: They were my best friends growing up. I was a sickly boy with a stammer, and the horses were the only ones who never teased me. Over time, I suppose I came to understand them as well as you may understand people. I listen when they speak, and vice versa.
In Rowan's tent, Eivor found a note.
Rowan's first-week observations
The Ragnarssons were one thing, but largely I thought them the exception and not the rule, as far as as the Norse go. Yet these people, Sigurd and Eivor and Dag and Randvi and the others, they strike me as trustworthy. Perhaps I am simply tired of traveling, or perhaps Yanli's enthusiasm has won me over, but I think I will remain here.

Stable and Aviary built
In time, Eivor built the stables, allowing Rowan to properly house the clan's horses and train them up to their full potential.
  • Rowan: That's a damn fine stable we have now. Lord, look at it!

Eivor found Yanli at the Merchant's tent.

  • Eivor: What is it you do here, again?
  • Yanli: I buy and sell all manner of items. What's more, I am connected to a wide network of other traders, meaning I have access to nearly everything you could want, right here.
But I cannot do much of anything if I don't have a place to work. If you can build a place for me, I can get started right away.

Trading Post built
In time, Eivor built the trading post, allowing Yanli to bring in a valuable supply of various and sundry items from all over England.
  • Yanli: There we are. Nice to have a more permanent spot.
Eivor spoke to Yanli again. (If "Tell me about yourself." is chosen)
  • Eivor: We have talked so little since our first days, Yanli, and I know nothing about you. How did you come to live in England?
  • Yanli: I wish I had a more intriguing story for you. I came from Zhongzhou, far from here. For no real reason. Curiosity, I suppose. It is not an exotic story. A young woman, excited by the prospect of travel, granted passage on a trading boat.
  • Eivor: Do you miss your home?
  • Yanli: Yes, often. I intend to return one day, or perhaps coax some friends and family to join me here. But I am in no hurry.
  • Eivor: Well, you are most welcome here.
  • Yanli: O, I should soon have a few spices from the East to add to our feasts. As much as I love your hospitality... your food is... Well, you are doing your best.
Before leaving the shop, Eivor found a letter to Yanli on one of the tables.
Letter from Yanli's family
We have never been so pleased to receive a letter from you! What wonderful news! Our little flower has bloomed across the sea, and it feels as though it has been forever since you lived somewhere long enough for us to send you parcels.

I hope you will enjoy the spices and the oil. It broke our hearts to hear the things they have been feeding you! Perhaps if you offer them a bit of spice, their tongues will learn to pronounce your name properly, and you will not have to make it so easy for them!

In a large tent near the docks, she spoke to Eydis.

  • Eivor: Tell me about what you do here.
  • Eydis: If you want to deal with your raiders, you come through me. I'll make sure they're ready for you, and keep them in fighting shape.
You need to build some barracks. Otherwise, these raiders are going to get soft. And we can't have that.

Barracks built
In time, Eivor built the barracks, providing a proper home for the Raven Clan's warriors and raiders.
  • Eydis: Ah! with this we can recruit more warriors. Now I can build the most vicious crew ever to sail the rivers of England.
  • Eivor: Our warriors now have a place to rest and train.
  • Eydis: A fine shelter, it is. When word gets out, it should attract many Jomsvikings to fight with us. Which reminds me. A few of your raiders are chomping at the bit in hope of becoming your second. You ought to pick one.
Eivor chose and outfitted a jomsviking.

Settlement Renown 2
After building a few locations, many new people arrived to join the settlement. Several overgrown and ruined buildings were all cleared out by their efforts, opening up their plots for immediate development. Eivor consulted the new Settlement Status letter in her room.

Ravensthorpe's Status: Colony

Ravensthorpe qualifies as a colony now, I think. No longer a rag-tag assemblage of tents and muddy feet, we're now a point of local interest, attracting trade and new settlers.

A few new opportunities have opened to us...

– Tattoo and Barber Shop
– Shipyard
– Museum
Hunter's Hut
Fishing Hut

Of all these new services, I would recommend investing in Petra's Hunter's Hut first. This will earn you quite a few rewards if you can track down the right beasts.

We also have a few settlers looking to build some services that will help us grow bigger and wilder feasts...

– Bakery
– Brewery

The bigger the feast, the bigger the boost on morale, ours and yours. A worthy investment.

Randvi

Eivor left to investigate what she could build for the colony.

Eivor spoke to Svend.

  • Eivor: What is it you do here again?
  • Svend: If you need something tattooed, you come here and I do it. And you can bring me whatever designs you come upon, too. But of course, no shop, no tattoos. Build something for us when you can and then we'll get working.

Tattoo and Barber Shop built
In time, Eivor built the tattoo shop, allowing Svend to return to work and ink the skins of Ravensthorpe's settlers to their liking, using whatever designs Eivor brought in from around England.

  • Svend: O thank you, Eivor. This... this is the place we needed.

After Svend had passed away, Eivor consoled Tove at his grave and she continued her mentor's work.

  • Eivor: Tell me about what you do here.
  • Tove: If you would ever like to get a new tattoo, you can come to me. I'm open to inspiration, as well, so feel free to bring any designs you find.

Eivor went to the docks and spoke to Gudrun

  • Eivor: Can you remind me what you do here?
  • Gudrun: Whatever you need for your longship, my husband and I are happy to help. We have quite an eye for these things.
But right now we're more concerned with you building us a place to do our work. Get on that soon, won't you?

Shipyard built
In time, Eivor built the shipyard, allowing full outfitting of the Raven Clan's fleet.
  • Gudrun: This is perfect, Eivor! You really are a generous one.

On the northern side of the settlement, Eivor found a tent set up amongst Roman ruins and statues. There she spoke to a man wearing a Roman-style tunic and toga.

  • Octavian: Salve, Eivor! We have not yet been introduced. I am Octavian Claudius Britannicus, a collector of Roman relics.
  • Eivor: Quite a name you have.
  • Octavian: If you are wondering what good I will bring to the settlement, you need only look to the greatest empire the world has ever known.
  • Eivor: Yes, I have seen their great ruins. Always impressive.
  • Octavian: But you have not seen them restored to their former glory! And I can help. Of course, I will need a place to store my collection.
  • Eivor: I will build you something when I can. Have patience.
Later, Eivor asked him for a reminder of his role in the settlement.
  • Eivor: Can you remind me what you do here?
  • Octavian: If you find any Roman artifacts out there in the world, bring them here. I'll appraise them and see they're given a good home. With me.
  • Eivor: I must take my leave. So long.
  • Octavian: Bonum Fortunam in your travels, Eivor!
    Die dulci fruimini!

Museum built
In time, Eivor built the museum, providing a repository to collect and store the Roman artifacts she retrieved from around England.
  • Octavian: Hmmm. I suppose it will do for the moment. Though it lacks the grandiosity of the Empire at its peak.
  • Eivor: You don't like it?
  • Octavian: It's not that. It's just not terribly Roman. It needs more. More relics, more statuary, more... Rome! If you happen to find any distinctly Roman artifacts on your travels, bring them by. We can make something of this mess yet.

Eivor went to a tent near the longhouse and spoke to Wallace.

  • Eivor: What is it you do here again?
  • Wallace: When you hunt any animal, bring it here for trade. And if you get something really special, I'm happy to mount it. That said, though, I can't do much until you build me a place to work. It won't do tanning hides on makeshift tables and dirt.

Hunter's Hut built
In time, Eivor built the hunter's hut, allowing Wallace to fulfill delivery requests and provide taxidermy for Eivor's greatest hunts.
  • Wallace: Thank you for this. Whether fur, meat, or bone, we will provide only the finest.
  • Petra: And if you intend to go hunting... consider bringing us your kills. We will prepare the hides and heads.
  • Wallace: Aye. I've been mounting Petra's trophies for years. And she's a discerning woman.
  • Petra: In all things.
  • Eivor: I'll keep that in mind. Enjoy your new home.
Wallace walked away, but Petra remained.
  • Petra: Eivor. You seem to be someone with a penchant for... trophies.
  • Eivor: I do like victories, but I rarely keep a record of them.
  • Petra: Your weapons show the marks of great battles. And you walk with a pride that speaks to your triumphs. Am I wrong?
  • Eivor: You are not. Why do you ask?
  • Petra: To bolster our trade, of course. Wallace is the finest tanner and taxidermist in all of England. If you wish the tales of your hunts to outlast you, there is no better way than making trophies of your kills. If you defeat a rare and worthy creature, bring it to us. We will display it for you.
  • Eivor: A good idea. Keepsakes to adorn the longhouse. Thank you, Petra.
  • Petra: O, and before you go, could you spare a moment? For a small favor.
  • Eivor: I do not have the time at the moment, but I will return.'

Eivor spoke to a boy working outside the fisherman's tent.

  • Eivor: Can you remind me what you do here?
  • Arth: We're fishermen, my granddad and me, and we can help you with anything you need! Bring us fish you find out there and we'll pay you for 'em! But if I'm being honest, we can't do a think until we have a place to work. If you've got time, we'd love it if you could build something.

Fishing Hut built
In time, Eivor built the fishing hut, earning herself a fishing line and allowing Arth and Merton to handle fish delivery requests from around the settlement.
  • Arth: Thanks for the good work, Eivor! Got a real little fishery going here.
  • Eivor: Are you the man in charge?
  • Arth: It's my grandfather, really, but he says the best way to learn responsibility is by working. Besides... between you and me... I'm better at it. More of a "people person," you know?
  • Eivor: I do. It's good to have you. Both of you.
Eivor received a fishing line, allowing her to easily reel in any fish she would take a few minutes to claim from England's waterways, whenever the mood struck her.

In time, Eivor built the bakery, earning the gratitude of Tarben, who asked her for help with a supply run.

In time, Eivor built the brewery, allowing Tekla to get back to what she did best and provide a steady supply of ale and mead for the settlement and its feasts.

Settlement Renown 3
After building a few more locations, more people arrived. Trees on the perimeter of the settlement were cleared out to make room for the beginnings of proper farms. Eivor consulted the new Settlement Status letter in her room.

Ravensthorpe's Status: Hamlet

Ravensthorpe is growing fast—we're a Hamlet now. Busier than ever before, attracting all manner of men and women.

Take special note of our new services, and build them up as soon as you can.

– Seer's Hut
– Cartographer

Valka would like you to build her seer's hut as soon as possible. I believe she has some prophetic wisdom to share or something even deeper. It sounds intriguing. Have a talk with her when you can.

Also, we have a few more opportunities to boost our capacity to feast and party.

– Cattle Farm
– Grain Farm
– Fowl Farm
Alvis and Holger's House

Things are looking up.

Randvi

Eivor left to investigate what she could build for the growing hamlet.

Eivor met Valka at the docks and escorted her to the tent where her hut would be built. After a conversation, Eivor promised to build the hut herself, given time.

Seer's Hut built
In time, Eivor built the seer's hut.

  • Valka: Hm. This will do. Thank you Eivor.
  • Eivor: Anything to help you feel at home.
They continued on to speak of Eivor's visions.

Just up the hill from the shipyard, a cartographer named Olsen pitched his tent on a plot of land. Eivor spoke to him.

  • Eivor: Tell me about what you do here.
  • Olsen: I've travelled this great country and found all manner of secrets, plus a few points of interest. For a price, my maps can be yours. If you want access to my maps, I need access to a workshop. If you can build me something, I'd appreciate it.

Cartographer's Hut built
In time, Eivor built the hut the cartographer required and availed herself of his services once he was fully set up.
  • Olsen: This is fine work, really. Thank you for seeing this done.

In time, Eivor built the cattle farm, providing a steady supply of meat and milk for the settlement and its feasts.

In time, Eivor built the grain farm, providing a steady source of wheat for the settlement and its feasts.

In time, Eivor built the fowl farm, providing a steady source of poultry for the settlement and its feasts.

In time, Eivor built a proper home for the clan's resident artists, Alvis and Holger.

Settlement Renown 4
With further development, more trees were hewn to add a few more buildings and expand the prospective farmland. Eivor consulted the new Settlement Status letter in her room.

Ravensthorpe's Status: Borough

Behold the borough called Ravensthorpe. We have so many new people that it is now possible to expand on some of the farms we have already tilled. This will improve their efficiency and increase the size and scope of our feasts. Have a look when you can.

– Kari's House
– Mayda's House
– 1st Cattle Farm expansion
– 1st Grain Farm expansion
– 1st Fowl Farm expansion

Excellent work as always, Eivor.

Randvi

Eivor left to investigate what she could build for the borough.

In time, Eivor built a proper house for Kari.

In time, Eivor built a proper house for Mayda.

In time, Eivor expanded the cattle farm, increasing its yield.

In time, Eivor expanded the grain farm, increasing its yield.

In time, Eivor expanded the fowl farm, increasing its yield.

Settlement Renown 5
Expanding beyond what had been built already, Eivor brought forth the absolute limits of what could be done within the established borders of Ravensthorpe. She consulted the new Settlement Status letter in her room.

Ravensthorpe's Status: Village

Ravensthorpe is now a proper Village. How quickly time speeds along, and how rapidly things develop.

We can now build a few more expansions on our current farms and houses. Here is a quick breakdown.

– 2nd & final Cattle Farm expansions

– 2nd & final Grain Farm expansions

– 2nd & final Fowl Farm expansions

We have nearly burst our borders, Eivor. Keep it up.

Randvi

Eivor left to investigate what she could build for the village.
Settlement Renown 6
Eivor spent every supply and raw material she had looted from every abbey and monastery in England and obtained from every alliance struck in every shire to expand the farms to their maximum potential and provide a home for every resident of the village, building it into a true Town. She read the final Settlement Status letter from Randvi.

Ravensthorpe's Status: Town

It is official. Ravensthorpe is now a Town, one large enough to sing about!

And most likely important enough to register in King Aelfred's Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, should he keep up the practice in spite of everything. Will Ravensthorpe withstand the sourge of time? Only history will tell.

Excellent work, Eivor. You have led us with clear sight and a sturdy hand.

Randvi

Outcome[edit | edit source]

Eivor expanded her settlement.
