A Cordial Invitation was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan in 2020 through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.[1]
Description
Eivor encountered a raided caravan and a man looking at one of his fallen brothers.
Dialogue
Eivor came upon the site of an ambush.
- Anglo-Saxon Soldier: Rest easy, friend. You will be avenged. Our bodies may be broken, our pouches may be empty, but our souls will thrive. You will be remembered.
- Eivor: What happened here?
- Anglo-Saxon Soldier: An attack gone awry. We found more of Constantin's Picts than expected. The rich have their numbers... both in coin and spears. My men were not ready, and we were overwhelmed. But I'm afraid it's not over. They know I still live.
He detected the presence of additional Picts.
- Anglo-Saxon Soldier: Hark! Pict reinforcements! To battle! The spirits of my men are with me, and my spirit with theirs. Owooo!
Eivor and the soldier defended themselves against the Picts.
- Anglo-Saxon Soldier: We will kill every king, even yours, for they squander the nobility they've been birthed to. Owooo!
After the reinforcements had been dealt with, Eivor approached him.
- Eivor: The threat is gone.
- Anglo-Saxon Soldier: What a fight! The Pict King Constantin will feel a little lighter in the purse tomorrow. Thank you for your aid, uh...?
- Eivor: Call me Eivor.
- Anglo-Saxon Soldier: The name is Ryce, Ryce Sherwin. You know, we could use someone like you in our band of merry rogues and knaves. The poor get richer and the rich get poorer thanks to us. We've a hideout in the woods. Drop by sometime, share an ale maybe.
- Eivor: Maybe.
- Ryce: Well, until we meet again!
Ryce began running across the bridge to his hideout. Eivor thought to herself.
- Eivor: A hideout in the woods. Sounds interesting.
In time, Eivor joined Ryce in his hideout.
- Ryce: Welcome, friend, to our neck of the woods! You are free to join us any time.
She spoke to him near the stockpile of supplies.
- Eivor: What is is that you do here?
- Ryce: We borrow some coin from the ones who have plenty, and give it to the ones who need them. We took silver from King Aella, jewels from Aethelwulf. I like to call it balancing the scale.
Eivor eyed the donation box.
- Eivor: A small gesture for their cause.
- Eivor: A small gesture for their cause.
Eivor walked away from the box.
Outcome
Eivor killed the attacking Picts, protecting Ryce. Later, she met with him again at his hideout in Sherwood Forest.
Behind the scenes
After players complete the memory, they have the option to make Eivor follow the man to his camp, where the memory "The Good Men of Sherwood" takes place. However, his dialogue at the hideout does not seem to be available if Eivor already encountered the hideout and made a donation to the box.
Ryce's green attire, his weaponry, and his mention of his "band of merry rogues" who are based in the woods and whose goal it is to rob from the rich to aid the poor all are allusions to the British folkloric hero Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men.
