Breaking Teeth, Not Hearts was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan in 2020 through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.
Description
Eivor met with a man sitting at a campfire in Nyhofn.
Dialogue
In Nyhofn, Eivor came across a man singing by a campfire.
- Norse Man 1: O'er the waves we sail, cutting the ocean's skin... and when the dawn arrives, the time for hunt begins...
Around the man were several slain animals. Eivor approached and spoke to the man.
- Eivor: Quite a number you've taken.
- Norse Man 1: It was not me alone. My friends and I won them. We call ourselves the Toothbreakers. Sadly, we were separated. By a beast, of a kind we've never seen. In one fell swoop, it tore our group apart. We are supposed to meet here, to hunt that creature before returning home. And so, I wait.
- Eivor: Wait in safety, then.
- Norse Man 1: Safe travels, and watch the woods.
Eivor left. She returned again after meeting and helping his friends.
When she returned, the woman with the pet turkey was sitting by the fire as well.
- Norse Woman: Arne, you are going to do just fine. Your skills will help us in the battle ahead! He will, right?
- Norse Man 1: Yes. Sure.
- Norse Woman: ...Arne really flew, I swear it! He just needed that little push...
- Norse Man 1: You do know this bird is not meant to fly?
- Norse Woman: Hogwash! Arne is a highly trained fowl. The rules of body and nature do not bind him! He will aid us in the hunt!
- Norse Man 1: I hope for his sake he flies fast.
When she returned, both of the man's companions were sitting by the fire as well.
Eivor spoke to the first man again.
- Norse Man 1: Good stranger! Thank you for your help. I heard what happened! We are just about to set off on our grand hunt for the fearsome beast. If the thirst of the hunt itches your throat, will you join us? Into the unknown we go! Join us, kinsman!
The man and his companions ran out of Nyhofn and Eivor followed.
- Norse Man 1: This beast bested us last time. We should be on our guard.
- Norse Man 1: Tracks. There is no mistaking it, it came from the same creature that attacked us.
The group came upon a deer that had been mauled. They examined it for a moment before following the tracks.
- Norse Woman: Grr!
- Norse Man 2: Ack! Hey!
- Norse Man 1: Please, can we get along? Your horseplay will be our death. So, what brings you here, kinsman? Was it the pull of the wilderness? The thrill of the hunt?
- Eivor: You could say that.
- Norse Man 1: Then you will not be disappointed! However, be warned. This beast is quick to bite, and fearless.
- Norse Man 1: Tracks. There is no mistaking it, it came from the same creature that attacked us.
As they continued, they heard the growl of a cougar.
- Norse Man 1: Can you hear it? It's close. I feel it.
The group ran up the hill and encountered the cougar.
- Norse Man 1: There it is! Gods, it's even more ferocious than before!
They fought the cougar.
- Norse Man 1: That glorious pelt... O, what a price it would fetch! Best us once, not twice! Your teeth will look nice on a string around my neck!
Together, they killed the beast.
- Norse Man 1: Good fighting! What a beast we felled! You showed true grit out there. Thank you for joining our hunt.
Eivor considered the hunt to herself.
- Eivor: Predator or prey... you are what you choose to do.
Eivor spoke with each of the Toothbreakers again before departing.
- Norse Man 1: We are done here. If we ever meet again back on familiar ground, you are welcome to join us.
- Norse Man 2: Th-that creature was even worse than a bear, truly. This wilderness is too much for me... I cannot wait to be back home.
- Norse Woman: Arne did so well! You too, of course! Now, we can return home with our head high.
- Norse Woman: Arne... o well. He lasted the longest, amongst the rest. Now, we can finally return home with our head high!
Outcome
Eivor joined the man and his companion(s), whom Eivor helped earlier, on a hunt and killed the cougar they were hunting.
